Really disappointed with the results from a SuperDeck product applied by the contractor that built my first deck – so much so that I replaced $1,100 worth of new redwood decking to correct the damage, I wrote the owner of a lumber company that actually owns a redwood forest and asked, if this was your deck, what stain would you use? The response was singular: Penofin.I have a pressure treated yellow pine deck now and wanted to improve its appearance. I appreciate that PT is really not designed for a penetrating product so I knew that any stain I chose was not likely to give me the same level of satisfaction I got from my redwood deck and in that regard, I was not disappointed.I did not want paint, a coating, I wanted penetrating oil, so I turned once again to Penofin, and chose the for Pressure-Treated Wood formula (Tahoe, I could have gone darker). My deck looks a whole lot better with Penofin on it than the bare PT pine. My one compliant is that I expected to need two gallons, three on the outside, and ended up needing four (I have a lot of vertical surface and an 8 inch wide railing so, that was probably my fault and not the product).Penofin. Cant beat it.
Bought this to stain my fence. A few things to help out others who might value this info as I couldn’t seem to find any.How much will you need?I had 165 ft of brand new cedar fence (not sq ft) that needed to be stained on both sides (that would be 330 ft total in length). The fence is a staggered privacy fence that arches in the middle up to 6ft and the post are generally 4×4. I ended up buying 20 gallons of this stain to get the job done. Waited about 4 months to stain the fence after it was installed so I skipped the prep work and just power washed it and applied the stain. The fence would just absorb the stain. Note that applying this to a fence is no easy task and will take time, even with a pump sprayer + brush. Some tips to help using this conservatively and not wasting as best you can.If you wanna use this stuff as conservatively as you can like me to save money. I used a pump sprayer and found the best nozzle to use is an adjustable one. The recommended ones would just spray too much on there and a lot would drip off. At first 2 gallons would with two coats would be gone in just applying it to two sections of my fence. I switched out the nozzles to the adjustable one and cranked it down so that it would spray with a lot of mist and very slowly. This made it more conservative to apply and you use a brush anyways to even out the coat. I was able to get A LOT more out of 2 gallons for areas that I didn’t care about as much like the outside facing parts. Less can be more with this stuff, you can really get into the perfection habit. The more you apply, the darker it will be and it might make you think the non darker areas you applied to before hand didn’t have any stain there.Clean up / prevention tips.It is water based but don’t expect it to just wash away like magic with water or soap. If it gets on your siding/concrete or something, it doesn’t seem to come off easily with soap and water. Instead, here’s a pro tip I recommend. Prep spray down whatever area you might get this stuff with a garden hose or whatever first. Just don’t get the wood wet but try and soak that area. Then apply your stain and rinse that area as you go or afterwards and you’ll see it just wash away nicely. I wish I figured that out beforehand as that made it SO MUCH EASIER! You can clean your equipment with soap and water yes but don’t expect it to be like brand new. Your pump sprayer and brushes will be stained, it’s similar to painting a house and your equipment will look used. The stain itself.Looks like there’s two versions of this stain and I got a mix of the two. I’m guessing the older stain due to the bottle not looking as nicely as the newer one with better graphic design has a lighter more light brown color. This stain when poured looks like milk chocolate milk. The newer stuff, which I preferred is darker and looks more naturally when applied. It pours like dark chocolate milk and the wood looks better IMO. Yes you should combine all of these stains into one mix but I didn’t have time and ordered as I went. So I used the lighter stuff for the outside fence and the darker for inside. All in all after all my research of reviews of other brands like TWP, ready seal, Defy, etc I chose this one due to the price, reviews, and water based to avoid mold/mildew. My neighbors used Behr which their outside had a lot of mold/mildew and the reviews for Behr didn’t seem that good. If I’m going to do all the work, I want the best for the right price. Also, on one of my larger orders they included a nice brush which I ended up using over the one I bought.I applied this in September 2019 so please remind me to update/post pictures on how the stain has held up since then since this product seems newer and not many reviews or comments out there as to how it holds up. It seems to be close to Defy’s water based product so I’m hoping for similar if not better results.
1/2023 – UpdateI didn’t remember to post in 2022, but I wanted to add a couple of pictures. I will say that am not sure if the product is going to hold up through six years (horizontal surfaces like the deck) as it’s going on 3 years and I feel like I am seeing wearing I didn’t expect. However, I am not a professional. I applied it with a brush and, perhaps, I didn’t apply it as well as I should have. I am not comfortable blaming the product alone. Some sections seem to be holding up better than others. Currently, the furniture is covered up, but most of it seems to be holding up better than certain areas of the deck. It should be noted that most of the deck is probably close to 30 years old if not older. That may be a factor as well.6/2021 – UpdateI originally posted last November after treating wooden deck furniture. This June, I treated the deck after having it power washed. Still thrilled with the product and the way it’s working. I am adding 2 additional pictures. The first is after the deck was power washed and the second is after I treated/painted it with this product. You can even see beaded water on the deck 🙂11/2020I am posting a review of this product along with some pictures. I will plan on updating it each year as the product is said to last approximately 6 on horizontal surfaces and 10 years on vertical surfaces.First, let me say that I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. When the product arrived I found it to be somewhat thin. When I realized it was water based, it made more sense that it wasn’t very thick. That being said, I have been very pleased thus far with the results. I did the application with a brush. As you will see in the pictures, it does what it needs to do when it comes to rain. I also wasn’t sure what color to get. I picked the bronze cedar and when used on new wood, that is the color you get. It is beautiful! You will see the color is not quite the same (seems a bit darker depending on the light) when used on wood that has already been treated with a previous product (I don’t recall what product or color was on the furniture that I re-treated) It doesn’t bother me, though, that the color isn’t the same. Now for the pictures. The picture of the deck boards that I treated show the true color. I have not yet treated the rest of the deck as I want to make sure to power wash and clean it first and won’t be able to do that till spring. When you see the picture of the boards with the water beaded on them and then see the boards around it don’t have beaded water, it’s because the rest of the deck has not yet been treated. The pictures of the furniture show the “before” of one of the small end tables and the “after.” It also shows an “after” of another chair and table set and big picnic table. Mind you, the furniture wasn’t in the best of condition. The last time it was treated was several years ago. I am very pleased with the way this product has worked so far. If you do happen to see an area that was missed, it is NOT the fault of the product, but of the person doing the application (me!) I look forward to treating the rest of the deck (and furniture) in the spring with this excellent product!

I used this on a cross-cut face of very green wood. It sealed the wood very effectively, as evidenced by cracking on the mating face that did not get coated. Follow the directions as you need to get that second coat in place before the first hardens for full protection and the sealant is very low viscosity. I would think this will machine off fairly readily as you need very little material to seal the end and thus it cannot have produced a lot of treated wood. I have not yet evaluated how well a treated surface will take a final finish once it is machined and sanded in those cases where little material removal is required.
It went on my deck using e paint roller very smooth ly and dried over night. I can’t judge the longevity since it has only been on three days of sunny weather.
I was a spectacle due to the price. I was worried this would just be something like a re-branded Thompson’s Water Seal, but I was wrong. I spilled some on the top of the lid and it dried. When I tried to take it off it was slightly stretchy. I really like that because it means the wood can still bend and the sealer moves with it. So far non of the PT deck board ends I applied this to have cracked or checked. Very happy.
This stain is excellent. Don’t be fooled like I was. I had written a negative review because the stain was coming out nothing like the pictures. And my wood fence was hardly looking stained at all. Turns out, you have to mix the heck out of this. I thought just leaving the can upside down for a day and then shaking it well before pouring would get the job done as far as mixing. Absolutely not. You have to pour some of the contents into another container, then shake the remaining stain in the can well. Transfer the contents of the container back into the can, shake, and repeat the process a couple of times to really get a good mix in. Otherwise, you’ll get hardly any color. I ended up having to restain a few parts of my fence over again which was a pain. But once mixed, it stays mixed pretty well. I just for precaution shook the can each time before I poured more for use. The consistency seems rich. And the stain goes on with ease and takes time to soak in. And the color is absolutely fantastic.I’ve never stained anything before, and my large fence was my first time doing so. It was a lot of work, but it looks darn good. I’d definitely recommend buying some type of stain sprayer for larger projects. I used the Wagner on Amazon for $85. Works well enough.
Found this IPE (Iron wood) patio set at the marketplace for free. After pressure washing, and a little sanding, we use IPE Oil. The results are outstanding. I gave to hands of IPE oil to get the dark rich brown. I placed the chairs side by side to compare without Oil, one hand and two.
We have redwood on our house that gets bleached out every year by the sun. We’ve always used that popular t-word sealer and it never covered completely no matter how many coats we put on it. I read the reviews on this and decided to give it a try, it was a bit messy because we couldn’t seem to get a break with the weather, but this applies easily with our sprayer and covered everything well!I don’t think we’ll need more than one coat. Will definitely buy this again. Very happy with this product and the seller.
Product is great. Decent coverage. And if your deck isn’t in bad shape one coat might do the trick. I’m only taking one star because color isn’t quite what I was expecting. Bought classic taupe and it looks almost like beige/off white

I built a 250 foot fence using pressure treated pine and wanted a stain that would preserve the wood grain and protect from sun and water .I applied it with an air sprayer and it looks great . It also is repelling water . There are some things to know , for one you must stir it completely and occasionally when applying as the color settles to the bottom , it’s also oil based so it takes a long time to dry .Overall i really like the finished product but will get back in the future concerning longevity o

I bought this to seal a cedar garden bed I built. It’s PERFECT. Super easy to apply and makes the wood look GORGEOUS.

Love this product I cant say enough about how beautiful the color is! It applied very easily and even. Also I want to mention the reviews saying theirs came in expired, the date on top is manufacture date not exp date and the plastic rim you can pry it off from the bottom using your hands. Would buy again for sure. Great price for quality stain!
