How To Buy The Best deep freezer In 2022

If you’ve ever tried to store the leftovers after a big meal, you know the benefits of an extra freezer. But they can also come in handy for those living in dorm rooms or needing food storage for an office. When shopping for an extra freezer, though, you’ll have some choices to make as you weigh one model against another.

The first thing to decide is whether you want a dedicated deep freezer or a mini-fridge that includes a small freezer. If you’re buying the appliance for use in an office, dorm room or small apartment, you’ll probably need both a refrigerator and a freezer.

However, if you already have a refrigerator and you’re looking for something to extend the storage space of the freezer you already have, a chest-style freezer is likely what you need. This is a big investment, though, especially in floor space, so consider it carefully.

“Ask yourself if you freeze enough stuff to justify it,” says culinary expert Julie Chernoff, food journalist, dining editor of Better magazine and member of Les Dames d’Escoffier “Do you bulk buy meat? Split a whole pig with another family? Have a large family? Hunt? Many families can make do with the refrigerator/freezer in their kitchen.”

You may be used to the auto-defrost built into most of today’s refrigerators. Unfortunately, many dedicated freezers don’t offer that feature. An anti-frost freezer mat can help you keep frost buildup at a minimum. You’ll also reduce your need to unplug your freezer, remove all the items and wait for it defrost. Instead, you’ll simply wipe away ice crystals as you notice them forming.

You’ll probably find yourself facing a dilemma when it comes to size. If you’re limited on space, you’ll have to go with a smaller freezer, but that means giving up capacity. Squeezing a large roast or turkey into a freezer that size may become a challenge, especially if you already have items inside. Shelves and baskets only complicate this, so make sure if you buy one that comes with those features, they’re removable.

“Be sure to measure the space where you plan to set the freezer BEFORE purchasing it to determine the size that’s right for your family,” Chernoff advises. “And the larger the freezer, the more likely it is that food will get lost at the bottom or in the back, so it’s important to organize your freezer as you’re filling it, meaning label everything, of course, but also choose a freezer with extra drawers, adjustable shelves, or other organizing elements.”

If you’re buying a freezer that will be in your living area, noise will be a consideration. The compressors required to keep your items cool are by nature noisy, but technology has quietened things quite a big over the years. It’s especially important for those living in small spaces like dorm rooms to make sure they buy a device that minimizes noise.

Some freezers have doors that are reversible. That means you can set them to open to the right or the left. Left-handed people may want to reverse the direction for comfort. Most of the time, though, this feature is valuable because it lets you decide which direction works best for the area where you’re storing it. If your cabinets are to the left of your freezer rather than the right, for instance, being able to switch your door will be very helpful.

Additionally, freezers are notorious for their energy consumption, so you may want to look for a unit with an Energy Star rating. If you are storing it in a garage, you might want to make sure your freezer can withstand higher temperatures.

And you’ll also want to keep the safety factor in mind. “Important safety features to consider are lockable freezers, to prevent kids from leaving the door open after scoring a popsicle on a hot day, and anti-tip construction to prevent possible tragedy,” says Chernoff. “I also prefer an exterior thermostat to monitor the temperature inside without opening the door.”

The deep freezer Tips and Advice

There are two major types of freezers. The traditional “deep freezer” design allows food to be loaded in from the top. Other freezers are designed similarly to mini-refrigerators, with a door that opens on the front for easy access.
Check the dimensions of the freezer you’re considering to make sure it will fit in your space. The Midea Chest Deep Freezer, 7.0 Cubic Feet measures 32. 1 by 21. 7 by 33. 5 inches. If you’re hoping to go even smaller with your freezer, look for a model that comes in around 19.7 by 21.3 by 33.9 inches.
Once you’ve squared away how much space your new freezer will take, check to make sure you’ll have enough room for your items. One chest may offer 3 cubic feet, while another has just over 2 cubic feet of storage.
With upright freezers, you’ll need a small amount of clearance around it, so make sure you add in a little extra space for that when you’re measuring.
If you need more space, look for a freezer with the choice of 5 or 7 cubic feet of interior space.
If you ever think you’ll need to move your mini-freezer, pay attention to the weight as well. The Northair Chest Deep Freezer, 3.5 Cubic Feet weighs 50 pounds, while some other models weigh a whopping 152 pounds.
The layout of your freeze comes into play since many models include shelving. Consider a model that also comes with two hanging wire baskets if you have small items you want to suspend toward the top. If a freezer comes with shelves, make sure they are removable for when you need that extra room.
Look for a reversible door, as this means you can set it up to open in the direction you want.
An adjustable thermostat can give you more control over the temperature in your freezer. The Northair Chest Deep Freezer, 3.5 Cubic Feet lets you move the thermostat between -4 and 6.8 degrees Fahrenheit, while the Midea Chest Deep Freezer, 7.0 Cubic Feet lets you adjust all the way down to -28 degrees.
There are freezers that have a special feature called fast freezing functionality for those times when you arrive home from the grocery store with your ice cream softening.
One handy feature unique to some models is that its door opens and locks in multiple increments. That means you can prop it open just as far as you need to load your items in without letting cold air escape.
Many chest freezers don’t include auto-defrost capabilities. That means as frost starts to build up, you’ll have to put some work in. Some chests include a defrost drain to let the water drain out as the ice melts.
Consider a freezer that has a lock with two keys to keep your items secure. If you store your freezer outdoors or in a garage, this will help keep thieves out.
If you’re keeping your freezer in a garage or kitchen, you probably won’t worry too much about noise. However, for dorm rooms or office spaces, even a small hum can become a distraction. Look for a freezer that uses a quiet compressor that keeps noise to a minimum.
For those who worry about eco-friendliness, the Energy Star rating is a “must” for any appliance search. Not only does this feature cut down on energy bills, but it also provides consistent temperature control throughout the interior.
Durability is also an important factor to consider while shopping. Freezers made from high-quality stainless steel are an excellent choice. With most refrigerators and freezers, though, it’s important to be careful when moving them because the exterior can dent and scratch easily, even with top-quality construction.

  1. I got the 5.1 cubic foot freezer and it is the perfect amount of room for me. This would, without a doubt, be a 5 star product if it weren’t for a couple things. One, it arrived with dents and also with what looks like orange/yellow glue or some substance all down the front. It is very dry and hard. It goes from the lid to the bottom, right down the center of the front of the freezer. It does not come off. I have tried almost everything. If anyone has any suggestions I would really love to hear them. It makes it look like I don’t keep my appliances clean. Some areas look like it might be scratches/scrapes, others you can feel it is raised so it’s definitely something on it.I did not return this to get a new one on purpose. It works very well even with the dents and the weird substance on it, and I have a feeling I probably would have received one in much worse condition if I got a new one. I sucked it up and just kept it.Second, freezers should be kept at 0ºF or even colder. The recommended setting for this freezer is to have it on 4. When I have this on 4 it does not get down to 0ºF. It is around 20ºF I have to have this set at 6 at all times and that is exactly 0ºF. I feel like I am using more energy than I should. If you don’t have a thermometer for this, I definitely recommend setting this at 6 so you know your food is getting cold enough. The freezer is pretty spacious. I bought stack-able baskets that fit against the left side and back in the bottom to organize meat I vacuum seal. I also bought a second freezer basket here on Amazon that fits perfectly on the top next to the one that came with this. It runs fairly quite. I don’t hear it at all unless I am right up near it while it is running. This freezer is really nice and holds a lot, but something needs to be done about quality checks and shipping.

  2. Update 4/25/2019 — HAD to repair this with a new start relay, part QP2-4.7 three-pin model — It is available on Amazon, two pieces for just over ten bucks. It has been about 20 months, and like so many others have experienced, this freezer died on me. I took a chance with all the bad reviews, though there were not so many when I bought it.My unit would power on, turn the compressor on, then shut the compressor off after a few seconds. This cycle repeated, with no cooling whatsoever. On the reviews for the white version of this freezer, someone had done a similar repair.Once I received the part, it took less than 5 minutes to fix. If your remove the old relay, and it rattles when you shake it, you know it is bad. It is located on the side of the compressor, under a plastic cover, towards the front of the machine. Remove the access cover near the cord to see the compressor.Easy fix. they should have included an extra one with the freezer–it would have saved them a lot of headaches over at RCA/Igloo.So far, so good. UPS delivered this without any damage at all, and the freezer seemed packed well enough that it would take some pretty good lumps. The UPS guy in my area is great, and always treats packages with respect, but sometimes the guys at the warehouses/sorting centers can be a bit less gentle. I waited over 24 hours to plug it in, due to the unknown orientation during shipping, and, so far, it seems like it is cooling down properly. We will see in a few hours. So– my takeaways:The freezer is surprisingly light–really easy to maneuverer by myself. The dimensions are spot on, which is great, because it fit though my 22-inch travel trailer door, without removing the thing. This thing is super quiet–no fan noise and just a mild hum from the compressor while it pumps refrigerant. Some grievances I have:I bought this for an off-grid travel trailer, to use as a fridge. I am running it off a 12 volt solar system, through a Power Bright 1100 watt (2200 surge) inverter. The first thing I found upon unpacking this freezer was the EnergyGuide label. Unlike the 172 kWh of energy usage pictured on the product listing, this uses 196 kWh a year, according to their tests. OK, that is just a bit more, but it is still far less than other similar models.Second, most of the time you figure 8-10 times the startup draw than the running draw for inverter usage. On the back of the machine, the amperage while running is listed as 1.1 amps, at 115 volts. It also lists the startup current— 18 AMPS! Or 2070 watts. I have been waiting anxious to see how my new inverter will handle this, since I figured the startup watts would be at most 1200 or so.Surprisingly, the small Power Bright inverter handles it fine. There is an initial surge– according to the inverter’s built-in watt meter– of just over 900 watts, then it drops down to about 114 watts while the compressor is running. The fan on the inverter does not even come on unless it is hot out!Now I just have to wait for my extra panels and batteries to run this constantly, and I will be set. I plan to use a 12 volt temperature relay to replace the on/off switch of the inverter, which will turn the inverter and freezer on only when the temperature rises above 38 degrees. This will minimize the noise of the inverter/freezer at night while I am sleeping, while eliminating the extra power draw from the inverter when it is not actively being used.I will update this review as I go along to note any changes/problems.UPDATE: I upgraded to a pure sine inverter to run the freezer. My Power Bright 1100 watt modified sine inverter starts and runs the freezer fine, but this freezer seems to be especially sensitive to power quality. I was struggling to get the freezer down below 40 degrees, even after running it all day. I noticed the compressor kicked on and off often, so I deduced that it was probably triggering the overheat protection on the compressor. With modified sine waves, the harsh changes between peaks can cause compressors to overheat easier. With the pure sine inverter, the compressor stays running longer, and it takes only a few hours to drop the freezer below freezing. So If you are having problems running this on solar, consider upgrading to a pure sine inverter. I went with a 2000 watt model from Power TechOn, and it seems to work really well.

  3. This review is for the KTCF195 7.0 Cubic Foot model. The freezer arrived quickly and with no noticeable damage. Shipping container was fairly sturdy while keeping the size of the shipping box small. Padding was adequate for the purpose, but rough handling or an inattentive forklift operator could defeat the protection of the shipping container. The freezer is light for the size and this is overall a good thing. It makes it super easy for one person to move the freezer while empty. A reasonably strong person can carry this 7.0 cu ft freezer up or down a flight of stairs with only a moderate amount of gentle encouragement by the lady of the house. Don’t attempt to move while full. The light construction will not be your ally when pushing and pulling a fully loaded freezer across your floor.Once stationed and connected to a standard 120V wall receptacle, a frost appeared on the interior walls within a few minutes. The freezer was loaded with already frozen food from the overstuffed main fridge and experienced no issues. It warmed up slightly as the food from the main fridge freezer section is not a cold as the deep freeze max cold setting. Overnight the freezer cooled down to the set temperature. At max cooling items such as ice cream are frozen solid and require a little bit of time to warm up to soften. This is desirable as the colder termps will keep items fresh longer. After filling the freezer to the brim with various frozen items fresh from the market, the freezer has taken a while to freeze fresh meats in the rack. Items deeper in the freezer and closer to the sides have frozen solid. I would consider the rack as a great place to chill something that you might not want to freeze solid, but I’m sure if you leave something on the rack long enough it will also freeze, but maybe at a slightly higher temp than something deep down in the deep freeze. The compressor can’t be heard from a few feet away. The freeze turned on automatically with no need to push a button. Other reviews mentioned a need for manual intervention to turn the freezer on after a power outage, but the model I received does not have this limitation. If the freezer doesn’t automatically start up after a power outage that could be a problem if the freezer is out of sight / out of mind, but again the model I’m reviewing starts up as soon as plugged into an active outlet.Very happy the freezer for the price. Wife is happy that the main fridge freezer section is not so full that opening the door is a danger to bare feet (something frozen falling on your toes). Would buy again.

  4. Bought the Midea MRU01M3ABB Freezer July 2021 as a back up for when I run into those chance meat sales at the market or whenever I need to stash some frozen items when my kitchen freezer or chest freezer are out of room or store some items from the chest freezer in the garage to nearer the kitchen for upcoming meal plans instead of running all the way out to the garage.Anyway it’s been a good little runner for almost a year running 24/7 up until about 24 hours ago when I noticed everything was thawing out. Cursory inspection by sight and feel told me compressor went out. Compressor hot and the inside box temperature had climbed to 44 degrees instead of the normal -10 or so.Now I get to test and report back here my experiences with Midea “compressor and parts” warranty claim process and their performance. Hopefully I can safely say they are heroes and not zeros along with some good comments.Later. Bye !

  5. one of the hinges were broken from shipper, but overall a good freezer! not sellers fault. thanks a ton! a little smaller than id hoped. and a little heavier. but that makes it stronger.

  6. This is a very lightweight freezer and very easy to move around. I purchased it because I live in an area in California with lots of unplanned (and planned) power outages. I put ice on top of my frozen meat and have had no problem with keeping it frozen with several outages. The freezer has thin metal and is easily dented and is not frost free. I imagine I will have to thaw it occasionally (so only 4 stars). Just what I was looking for and as expected.

  7. THIS IS TO SMALL WAS TURLY NOT WHAT I EXPECTED NOT ENOUGH SPACE INSIDE CAN NOT GET ENOUGH FOOD INSIDE TO STORE NOT A GOOD BUY FOR ME VERY DISSATISFIED

  8. I needed something to bring back to Alaska that would fit in my car, so this was the size. I thought oh, it would just hold a few small things, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw how much bigger it was inside than I ever imagined. And it works great.

  9. Our company renovated all 3 floors right as Covid happened and we returned to the office in early 2022. The 2 freezers which were ordered back in 2020 are still on backorder which left us with only refrigerators. Since this will not work for ice cream which I do eat quite often I searched and purchased my own unit. The unit was delivered by Amazon in perfect condition and was very easy to set up. Just cut the straps and pull off the box top then the freezer can be lifted off the box base and set on the floor. It took all but 1 minute to unbox and set up.I’ve had this little freezer for 2 months now and it works great. Keeps all the ice cream frozen solid and tasty for morning or midday snacks. It’s very quiet and you won’t even notice that it’s running unless the compressor is kicking in. One thing I noticed is that ice does accumulate fairly quickly so scheduled defrosting seems to be set for the near future.I also asked how many containers of ice cream will fit in this freezer and the answers were totally useless so have posted a picture for reference. The ice cream is pint sized instead of 1/2 gallon.Whynter CUF-110B Energy Star 1.1 cubic feet Upright Freezer Stainless Steel door with Security Lock with Reversible Door – Black

As you can see from the photo the Arctic King 7.0 cf chest Freezer has settled right in it feels like it’s been here for years it was so easy to setup didn’t cause one distraction easy breezy lightweight your grandmother could carry it up a flight of stairs I don’t know what most people paid I paid 198 it arrived when it said it arrived damage free I can tell you how often I’m as happy about getting something and it does what it says 2 hours Frozen like a rock if I could think of a bad thing to say it I still wouldn’t. That’s how happy I am with it. And 5. that’s how many times in my life I’ve been as happy buying something. Not to be confused with how many times I’ve been happy. Stay tuned.

  11. It’s the perfect size, and arrived with no damage at all. After 24 hours I noticed a lot of frost built up already. That’s when I noticed the door wasn’t sealed at the bottom on the hinge side. Thankfully my hubby is a mechanic. He removed the hinge plate on the bottom, and found there was no hole where the screws needed to be in order for the door to seal properly. He drilled a new hole and put it back together and seals perfectly now. Moral of the story: perfect size freezer, but be prepared to have to tweak it.

  12. I was impressed that not only did this arrive quickly but it arrived without any dents or scratches and was packaged and delivered with care which I really appreciate. It’s easy to unpack and set up and you only need to plug it in and set the temperature after a manufacturer recommended half hour of settling time before plugging in. Setting the right temperature is the tricky part. I set my temperature gage to 3/4 of the way to max like others suggested and that worked out fine. I put a bottle of water in to test out the freezing process before putting food in. So far it’s working beautifully and holds a lot of food for the size! I put in two 15 pound turkeys, four frozen pies, about 10 pounds of other meats and about 10 pounds of frozen vegetables and still had loads of room left over! Impressive!

  13. Loving this freezer!

  14. Overall I like this unit. It is nice looking, compact, and provides even cooling. It was a little frustrating to find shipping damage twice. The first one had to be returned because of substantial damage to the frame near the compressor. The replacement unit arrived with a buckle in the upper rear corner. Amazon made a price adjustment that we could live with and I give Amazon credit for responsive customer service. The temperature control is located behind the freezer which is not convenient so you have to move the whole unit to adjust. The shelves are not adjustable because they are integrated with the cooling coils. It is probably a worthwhile tradeoff for efficient cooling, but limits the size of what you can store. If you can get one that does not get damaged in shipping, then I have no problem recommending it.

  15. Great little freezer, holds a lot of food and the shelves keep everything organized and easy to get. Ordered 3. First one was dented and had a hole in it, like a gun shot. Second one had a crack inside and frost started building on the crack as soon as it was plugged in. The third one was dented down the front door but since it was for the basement I kept it and was offered a discount. Works just fine and returns were easy, but 3 out of 3 being damaged was frustrating.

  16. We had an issue with our FM-85 WHYNTER. The staff at Whynter provided “Old Time Service”. They provided a new part and when that didn’t fix the problem they arranged for transportation to their facility. Subsequently a new FM-85 was sent. The whole process was seamless! This type of personal service is unusual in our automated society. We actually spoke with an individual–Angelica–who led us thru the process. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Whynter Team—-YOUR GREAT. John Fontana Beaufort S.C.

  17. It big enough to hold a lot of frozen goods and fits nicely in a small space.

  18. Two of us are living in a condo and I knew I wanted a chest freezer for the garage. I was debating between the 5 and 7 cu.ft. models and I made the right choice. The smaller of the two holds a LOT of food. I ran out and bought a small turkey and all kinds of sale items that included meats and veggies and 2 pies and ice cream…and there is room for SO MUCH MORE! I really wish this Midea 5 cu. ft freezer came with two baskets instead of one, but other than that, I am very pleased with my choice thus far. It arrived two days after I ordered it, in perfect condition, and I was able to “walk” it into my garage by myself. I am a 5’2″, 75 year-old woman. Living in NE Ohio with winter approaching, I can now hibernate if necessary. It should only increase my monthly electric bill by $2 to $2.50 per month. I set it to High initially, but after reading other comments, I feel comfortable turning it down to the Medium setting. I am well pleased with this purchase.

  19. My wife and I had one of these aboard our boat for several years and loved it. When we decided to buy a standalone freezer for our home we looked for the same unit and bought it again. We just got the new one, and it was amazingly well packed. How refreshing to receive a good product that was also carefully shipped. We received it without a scratch. We highly recommend this product.

  20. Haven’t plugged it in yet. Will update review when we try to use the product. Item showed up damaged in multiple areas.
