  1. This is wonderful tool to help match an unknown paint against know color swatches from 20 major paint manufacturers. This is better than working with color swatches or a shot in the dark – but it has issues.Over the years we’ve repainted the rooms in our three story Victorian several times and kept track of every paint color except for two colors. That’s where the Nix comes in. Before testing any of our unknown wall colors we tested the Nix mini against 10 color swatch’s from the store. The Nix was 100% accurate and identified the color name and the manufacture right off the bat. The same was not true for the colors of our know colored walls. The Nix offers “Excellent” matches to a scan and “Good” matches. All of the known colors on our painted walls were “Good” matches to the paint color we used and none were “excellent.” And when it came to matching the grey in our bedroom, the Nix was terribly wrong100% of the time.Excluding our grey bedroom where the Nix failed miserably, the difference between the scan and the name of the paint on our walls is noticeable. Thankfully the Nix allows for side by side comparison of their scan against suggested colors. The color imbalance on our walls maybe caused by human error, the sunlight effect, dust, the primer we used, number of coats applied, surface conditions, or different mixing machines. These might account for some of the subtle differences between the Nix scan and the named paint. Our worst results were from our freshly painted “grey room.” The walls were dark primed and three top top coats of grinder grey made everything uniform. Our Nix was totally wrong time and time again and our color wasn’t listed. With all our mixed results we are still very pleased. The side by side comparison feature is fantastic. No ability to save your scan for future use with the Mini 2. Great for a homeowner handyman around the house. If you’re a pro, you’ll need the pro model features.

  2. We have a pair of front doors that had been exposed to the elements for over 30 years. The doors are solid wood with oak veneer and solid oak molding. Each door is 3’x 8’ and weighs about 225 pounds. The exterior veneer started separating from the core in several spots. The inside of the doors are custom painted to match the interior of our home, and they are in excellent condition. We considered replacing the doors but the cost was prohibitive, and we could never match the custom paint job on the inside. So we decided to paint the exterior of the doors.Due to the complexity of the project, we decided to remove the doors from their hinges, move them into my shop, and remove as much of the veneer as possible, while preserving the interior finish. Some of the veneer came off with a simple putty knife. We had to moisten the remaining veneer with a damp towel for a couple of hours and then steam it with a hot iron so we could remove it with the putty knife. Approximately 90% of the veneer was removed, and that which remained was sanded down to blend smoothly with the rest of the door.Good preparation is the key to a successful paint job, so we began sanding with 80 grit sandpaper, then moved to 120 grit, 180 grit, and finished with a fine 220 grit. We used a power sander with a vacuum hose connected to a shop vac and wore face protection during the process. All of the solid oak molding was hand sanded with the same grits of sandpaper, and every attempt was made to preserve the detail in the molding. The colors of front door paint offered by Modern Masters are beautiful and stunning. After great deliberation, we decided on “Sophisticated,” the middle of the three red-tone paints offered. We wanted our front doors to define our home, to give our home some personality, and bring it to life. “Sophisticated” was the perfect answer. Some may not care for red front doors, and that’s fine. The important thing is that we know this special color hit a home run for us, and we could not be happier. It is important to remember that the light and shade your front doors receive throughout the day will change the way your paint looks. The shade will darken the appearance of the paint and direct sunlight will make it look its brightest. Since our doors receive both, we see different tones throughout the day. It is almost like our doors are alive expressing different moods as the day progresses. The attached photographs show how the appearance of our paint changes in different lighting. Before painting, we removed all dust and particles from the wood surface and taped the doors to protect the good inside finish. Also, we removed the solid brass hardware from the doors, stripped its old lacquer finish, and refinished it before replacing it on the newly painted doors. We had some water damage to the bottom of the doors and used Bondo to repair them before painting. We also applied new weather stripping to the bottoms of the doors. We followed Modern Masters instructions for painting. Due to the veneer removal, there were areas on the doors which were much lighter than the molding. To ensure the different shades would not spoil our paint job, we applied three coats of Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Gray Primer by Zinsser. And this was followed by four coats of Modern Masters “Sophisticated.” We brush-painted the molding and used a four-inch foam roller on the flat surfaces of the doors. This is a semi-gloss paint, and the finished surface appears a little like a laminate which should really stand up to the elements. The doors look beautiful finished and should be good for another 30 years. We learned so much from the comments on Amazon, we decided to provide a little more detail in our review in hopes it will be helpful to those tackling a little more complex front door paint job.

A few weeks ago I redid my back deck which was in dire need of a makeover. I grew up in Arizona so I really wanted to do somewhat of a desert Western style. I decided to go with “tan” for my walls. I chose this brand because of how inexpensive it was to other paints like this. Because of this, I was worried that it would be thin and watered down looking. I had prepared myself to have to do 2 to 3 coats but in all actuality I only needed to do one. I was blown away by the quality of this paint, in light of the price. The color matched the product description’s picture just right.I went ahead and ordered 2 more cans because I liked it so much. I plan on doing the rest of my exterior in this color. Don’t hesitate.

  4. We have a deck door and patio door in white. Had painted two previous times, but doors got dirty and moldy fairly quickly. After wiping doors, I applied this paint. Easy to go on, completely covered mildew spots and still spotless 6 weeks later. Did not take much paint to cover.

  5. lhad no clue this was such a small can of paint looks decent enough but i thought it was a gal will have to buy more for the job, I wanted to complete.

  6. No issues. Great price for durability.

  7. I can’t even begin how amazing this paint is!! We had unfinished concrete floor for 2 years then I had 2 babies back to back and even though we wanted to do a staining/sealing, we didn’t have the time so we quickly got laminate and tile put down. After 10 years we decided to pull it all up ourselves. The look of our concrete was ok, but after experiencing a concrete countertop fail, we had to think again about the plan. I found this paint and others so I ordered a can and tested each. The other paint said it was gray, but it was clearly a blue and that’s not what I wanted. This paint was perfect. The color was a true gray, uncomplicated and perfect. So we began. The first can we did get was the light gray and it was gorgeous but a little darker than we wanted so I ordered a can of the lighter color and mixed the 2. It came out perfect. The paint is amazing quality. It goes on with such a beautiful feel and coverage. We only did one coat in each of the rooms in our house. A great fear we had was how long was our home going to be in complete chaos waiting for it to dry, ya know like blocking hallways, bathrooms, kitchen etc.. it literally dried in 45 minutes where I felt comfortable walking on it without messing it up. Sooooo grateful for that, cause we were able to have our small house(with 5 people) functioning back to normal quickly. I did add to each of the 2 gallons mixed a package of glitter and oh my gosh I LOVE the results! It’s normal during the entire day, but in the evenings you can see the sparkles all over 💚💚 we’ve had it completed now in heavy traffic areas for a month now. I can mop it just as I always have and it cleans beautifully. It’s super durable, we have 2 pits and 3 wild girls and it’s shown to be super tough to withstand lots of hard use. I can’t recommend this enough. The shipping and delivery was quick and we are planning on painting the concrete in our barn now with this. I’m SO grateful for this company and the quality product it has.

  8. Very easy to use the scanning result is pretty consistent on flat surface. I am also glad it supports Kelly Moore although not mentioned in production description

  9. Great water based paint. Easy to apply. Goes on thick. Easy cleanup.

  10. I’ll admit it, I was a little worried about purchasing paint online. The color swatches never seem to match the actual color. The same was true of the color I purchased — Riverstone. The color swatch was a lot darker than I wanted, but I needed a low sheen brown because I told my landlords that I would paint once I moved into the home and promised that I would keep the colors as close to the originals as possible (truth be told, their brown colored walls have a muted muddy look… Its ugly. I hate it).Riverstone, in the bucket, has a melted milk chocoloate color. I knew when it dried it would be a shade darker and it was, but it still looks like milk chocolate. Get yourself a milk chocolate candy bar and look at the color — that’s Riverstone. I really love the color. Its beautiful and the low sheen makes it perfect for all the walls in my home — easy to clean, but will hide surface defects of the wall, too.Once stirred in the bucket, the paint is so smooth and thick, and paints on like a dream. Since my walls were a lighter (awful) brown, there were some spots that I had to go over twice, but it was mainly my fault for not dipping the roller again towards the end of the single roll. Where I cut in at the trim with a paintbrush, those parts needed another coat, but again that was my fault because I didn’t overload my brush with paint (didn’t want drips). Another thing, I am so truly grateful this paint is thick enough to cover, because at my age, I have absolutely NO business being on a ladder (age and a stroke). This paint has made my task so much easier for me.I’ve painted my kitchen and the small hallway leading to the kitchen and I’ve only used about a gallon of the 5 gallon bucket I purchased. So, I’ll definitely have enough paint for my other downstairs rooms — an extra bedroom, small bath, and the living room. Since I’m so pleased with the Riverstone color, I’d absolutely LOVE to try out the Almost Dusk and Snow White shades for the upstairs rooms, because I think those colors would be beautiful and relaxing. So, if you’re looking for an economical low sheen paint, that’s a lovely milk chocolate brown, and covers in one coat, I definitely recommend Montage’s Signature Interior/Exterior Riverstone. I promise you, you will not be sorry. Great paint. Great coverage. Great color. Great price. Thank you, Montage!!

  11. I bought two of these little guys, one for my mom who is an artist and one for myself as I dabble in art and other paints. I was hoping it could be used on portraits or pictures to identify colors but not so much. Sure it identifies some color but the color you are scanning has to be solid, anything mixed and you get terrible results that are not quite close to what you scanned. Even sometimes scanning something like a banana will give you an orange color when the banana is yellow, so there’s some refining that needs to be done in how the color is identified. The app (Nix Paints) also needs some work. You have to choose “color libraries” which are mainly just mainstream paint companies like Behr, Benjamin Moore, ColourFal, Valspar, (Home Depot) DoIt Best, etc. The paint libraries are all house-paint based. You can also only select a few libraries once you connect your Nix to the app. So when you are scanning a color it’s only searching the selected libraries and not all libraries the app has access to. If the library part was removed and all colors were searched when a color is scanned, that would be nice. There’s also a part of the app for “Digital Color Values” but that part of the App has been broken since I bought this Nix months ago. If you try to access that part of the App you’ll land on a screen from Google Play that says “Something went wrong, Try again”. You can try all you want but it doesn’t look like that part of the App has been built out. Digital color values is one of the main things I was going for when I bought this and that doesn’t even work.I would not buy this again (mom said the same thing!).

  12. This was kind of hard to find. We have an older deck that has seen many different coats of paints and such. We decided to give this a shot and go over everything we had withought a sanding or removing of the peeling latex crap I had on there. Surprisingly a year later and we have had very little come up of the Kilz product. A little pricey, but works really well

  13. I’ve used this product for many years and it has definitely worked well for applications both inside (the interior version) as well as outside. Great product and great results. My only concern is not to leave it on a shelf for longer than a year as the pigment inside the can clumps up and stirring it doesn’t really help. I also believe the price is more than it should actually be, but the results on a fresh can can’t be beat.

  14. I just loved how the thickness of this paint covered so well. It only required one coat as it exploded all over the box carrying it, antiquing everything else I purchased with it’s midnight hue. And it is so durable, as multiple washes will not remove it’s splatter. Should it have been shipped separately, or at least packaged with tape or plastic to prevent the paint can from damage while dancing during its journey? Perhaps. But where is the fun in not living dangerously, and forever finding black splats all over your possessions? And what of the lessons learned? Had I not been so faithful and adventurous, I would not have learned to never order paint through the mail. My one of many wishes, is that I was able to see this paint on the piece of furniture, it’s intended recipient, because it does cover oh so well. I guess the paint and I were excited to see each other, the paint maybe, more so than I.

  15. This door paint is nice, but SUPER smelly. I had to buy a specific paint brush because my other ones were not working. I wanted to paint the backside of my front door with it, but there’s no way. The smell was overbearing and smelt like varnish. But, for outside of the door, it did the job!

  16. I ordered the Coastal Blue Rustoleum chalk paint. I’ve used multiple colors of this paint before (Linen White, Chiffon Cream, Charcoal) just to name a few. I love this chalk paint for multiple reasons!1. The price!- If you’ve bought chalk paint before, you know that it can get a bit pricey for a small amount. Typically, you have to buy multiple containers for a bigger piece of furniture. Not with Rustoleum Chalk Paint, you can get multiple pieces of furniture done with one can of paint.2. The coverage- This paint is THICK, which means 1 coat of paint gives you great coverage. The photo posted is only 1 coat of paint. Knowing I was going to sand this piece, I did not want add extra layers that I was going to sand off anyway, (makes for more unnecessary work). If you’ve never used chalk paint, and the consistency is too thick for you to work with, just add some water to the paint. Makes the paint easier to work with, but you will probably have to do 2 or more coats for desired coverage.3. Dries Quickly- This paint dries fast, which if you’ve worked with chalk paint before, a quick dry time is desired, if you want the paint to to stay pliable for longer, adding water helps with that!4. Forgiving- This paint is forgiving, if you mess up or you think you did something wrong, just leave it be and let it dry, 9 times out of 10 it won’t look nearly as bad as you think it will. And if it doesn’t look like you want it to, a quick and easy sanding of the paint will make all of that go away! Use a finer sand paper to remove blemishes slowly to achieve your desired look.5. It’s SO EASY!- Chalk paint in general is so easy to work with, the benefits of using chalk paint as opposed to other paints is that you can paint directly on furniture with MINIMAL prep work. Most times I won’t prep a piece at all. I did no sanding to this piece before I painted it. The only part I sanded was the top, so I could stain it.Highly recommend this chalk paint, especially for beginners!

  17. After reading all the great reviews, we purchased this paint to paint our newly purchased and installed white pre-primed metal door. This paint dries fast! When they say fast, they aren’t kidding. Dries faster than you can smooth it out at times. It was easy to work with but because it dried so fast, it left marks where I would try to blend. The first coat made me nervous as you could still see patches of white through it. The second coat had much better coverage, the third coat covered all the white thoroughly, however due to it drying so fast, you could see roller and brush marks. I ready through over reviews and noticed people said adding Floetrol helped so I purchased some, added the correct ratio and painted a fourth coat. That did it and it looks fantastic! I’m so so pleased! One coat too many for the money but honestly I’m pleased with how it all turned out! So even, good coverage, and a rich black color. Add Floetrol if you intend on using the product, especially for the black paint!

  18. I am looking for a navy blue furniture paint for my bedroom set. Glad I painted a piece I am throwing away as the color isn’t dark enough. It is more of a cobalt blue not a navy blue. Other than that it is an easy to use product and went on beautifully. absolutely needs 2 coats. This was 1 coat over wood finish that was lightly sanded and wiped down. Update: so after about three days it did darken up a little or it grew on me. So I decided to paint the headboard and nightstands and I love it. Now I just have to paint my room. I have before and after pics of the nightstands and a after pic of the headboard. I also used dark gray on the headboard and it turned out beautifully.

  19. I am happy with the color and it matches the listing, but the smell was unbearable during and after painting. After we were done, (old fashioned rollers, no sprayer) we ran every fan in the house and both window fans to try and get rid of the very strong paint smell. Bring a good filtering mask and be prepared to evacuate a room for 2 weeks.

  20. Been using this for years and I’ve never been disappointed.Latest project: I had severe damage on 2 of my eaves inflicted by carpenter bees. I filled then with wood filler. I had a LOT of white filler exposed and it looked terrible. I painted with Rust-Oleum Brush On Paint and they covered up really well. Because of the mass amount of white filler I had I could still see a slight lightness on the larger patches. But I was impressed with the coverage. I did a second coat and it’s perfect. On other projects where I do not have to cover filler one coat has always done the job.One person had mentioned that it looked eggplant purple when first applied. That is true for the Kona Brown paint. But in no time it turns to dark brown. Not to worry. In fact I LOVE this feature as I can tell where I have left off and where to begin as I reposition my ladder.I truly love this paint. It can be used on any surface. It spreads so easily. Covers great. A quart covers a lot of area. It’s my go to paint….

  21. This product is easy to stirring with a standard drill. The paint goes on easy using brushes, roller or spray gun. Cleanup using hot soapy water. Use interior or exterior with great results. Price is half the price range from home depot.I’m so happy with the paint I bought six more gallons to do the garden shed and my garage “Man Cave”. You’ll be glad you bought this product.

  22. Painted white metal door . Looks good. If you have time sand first for nice smooth finish!

  23. This paint was used (along with the matching primer of the same brand) to paint over the textured fiberglass roof of an RV, mainly because of some other recommendations that I had read and because it was about 1/6th the cost of the next brand. The original gel coat of the fiberglass roof had started to develop some crazing and porosity and was beginning to look a little grungy in some spots. The primer ( I should be reviewing that separately) is very fast-drying with a semi-flat finish. It is heavy-bodied and has excellent filling characteristics when rolled on. This filled any fine cracks in the fiberglass gel coat. The Topside paint was then rolled on later on the same day that the primer was applied. It flows out very well and dries to a hard and glossy finish. I am reviewing this product three years later after application, and aside from some fine cracking where the fiberglass can flex (this is unavoidable), the paint is still in good shape and will last at least a couple more years. If it makes it that far it will have lasted as long as the original gel coat.I’ve not been a big fan of Rustoleum products, particularly the aerosol paints and their slow-drying enamels, but I can’t recommend this product enough. Unlike some of their other paints, this dries sufficiently after a couple hours to be dust and dirt free, and overnight it was remarkably hard.

  24. I went back & forth on this. I’m not a very experienced painter or do it your selfer, so was a little apprehensive about trying this. My desk was the typical old dull brown. I really like the desk, wife just hated the color. I decided I’d give this a try and if it didn’t work, just give it away and buy new. I did lightly sand it after reading other people’s reviews. I’d say I wound up with 2 full coats. Bought Joile finishing wax to finish the job. I’m very happy with the way it turned out

  25. I bought a quart of this to refresh the old faded and chipped paint on my porch and threshold. It went on very smoothly, covered everything nicely, and clean up was so easy. Just warm soap and water, and my brush was cleaned. Highly recommend this product and company.

  26. Worked very well for textured bathroom ceiling

  27. This is a really nice chalk paint. It is a true white color. it’s thinner than other chalk paints I’ve used, however I generally end up thinning out the other paints anyway. This spreads very easily. I find I generally have to use three coats for ultimate coverage, however this is generally the case with whites. I also recommend using a good stain blocking primer if you’re using this on any type of wood that may have tannins bleed through.

  28. I needed this shade for my front door. I couldn’t find at any of my local stores. I finally found it and it was reasonably priced. Probably the same as if I were to purchase it at the store. It came very quickly, and I was happy with the purchase.

  29. I was nervous about using this on my old steel front door, but couldn’t believe how easy it was to do. I didn’t sand or prime the door so it needed 3 coats, but with just 1hr between coats, it was done in one afternoon. I used a small roller and a 1 inch brush. Beautiful color and finish. The first coat will be really spotty and streaky, but don’t let that scare you! After the 2nd coat, the coverage is great. I did a 3rd coat just to be safe for the coverage.

  30. I used this for my 14 basement steps and had more than half left over. The can is small but was more then what I needed for my basement steps coverage. Looks nice, clean and neat.

  31. I was looking for something to refinish the shower of my 5th wheel trailer. It was stained from use and I was embarrassed at how old it looked. I needed something I could do on my own. Stumbled upon this item on accident. Looked at the reviews and thought it was worth a shot. After I showed others the finished project, they too purchased it. I recommend getting this to refinish any shower.

  32. We have used many marine grade paints. Awlgrip is the longest lasting of all of them, but you cannot fix blemishes in Awlgrip without repainting the whole surface. Rustoleum is best for areas that require regular touch up. In the tropics it lasts 3 to 5 yrs for direct sun exposed surtaces, but can be touched up at anytime and typically blends easily. It will last much much longer on shaded surfaces. Just scuff up the surface with sandpaper and paint. 3 coats for durability. Rustoleum is very inexpensive relative to the others. It may not be the “best”, but it is the best value for the buck.

  33. wish it was cheaper with inflation going up and all, but its worth its salt, I’m restoring a hunter compact 2 camper, total boat product is easy to work with

  34. Excellent Product

  35. Lovely color, chalky but smooth antique-like texture. Easy to paint with. Purchased the color linen, a tad lighter in person than shown. A lovely warm gray, leaning into greige with the brown tones, but I’d still consider it more on the gray side. High quality paints and perfect for furniture. Didn’t need to sand before applying. Topped with a coat of wipe on polyurethane and couldn’t be happier with the outcome. So many lovely colors, hard to choose my next one!

  36. Exactly as described

  37. I purchased this to paint steps to my laundry room that looked horrible and I needed something fast as I was having company. Figured it would look better than what I have now. I was pleasantly surprised. Very easy to use and apply and the finish came out beautiful! Took me very little time to apply the paint and it dried quickly. Would recommend this product.

  38. Used on exhaust manifolds, they look amazing now!

  39. I love it use it for cabinet painting and it wasn’t to much but just enough shimmer and shine I was looking for and I only used half the bag!!!

  40. Excellent product, I had 2×4 fence stringers that had to be constantly re-painted yearly because of cracking and peeling paint. Tried Zinsser Peel Stop and have not had to re-paint for years and still looks great.
