First, the instructions don’t say in what conditions to spread this lawn fertilizer. Some must be spread on dry lawns, others on wet lawns, and after spreading, some must be watered in, others must not be. The instructions on the bag for say nowhere whether to spread it onto a dry lawn or a wet lawn or whether to water it in or not, and if not, if there’s a timeframe that it’s preferred not to water the lawn or to avoid rain. This is NECESSARY INFORMATION. So, since it’s not on the bag, I went to Google. No instructions online either, the company’s own website providing no information at all on this subject.So, to err on the side of caution, I applied it to a wet lawn just before it was about to rain. That’s because fertilizers that require being applied to wet lawns require it because the ingredients are meant to be dissolved into the soil and if they’re not but remain on the grass, their potency will kill the grass. Applying it to a wet lawn just before it rains was safer because the worst that could happen is my lawn gets little to nothing out of it as the nutrients are washed too deep into the soil to do any good, which, at least to me, is better than burning and/or killing my lawn or huge sections of it, which brings me to the second thing.Second, the instructions that are there are wrong. The instructions say that if you have a Scotts broadcast spreader, which is what I have and have had and works great, to set it to 4 1/2, which is what I did. The instructions also say that the quantity in the bag covers 16,000 square feet, which is almost exactly the size of my yard. Following the instructions for swath size, I proceeded to make swaths to distribute the fertilizer over the entirety of my yard, BUT WHEN I’D FINISHED, I STILL HAD HALF THE FERTILIZER LEFT WHEN IT SHOULD’VE BEEN ALL GONE, SO EITHER THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BAG FOR SETTING MY SCOTTS BROADCAST SPREADER WERE WRONG OR THE INSTRUCTIONS INFORMATION ABOUT HOW MANY SQUARE FEET IT COVERS WAS WRONG– EITHER WAY, THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE WRONG.Now, before suggesting that maybe there’s something wrong with my broadcast spreader, know that there’s not. I use it regularly. I used it earlier this summer four times, once for distributing seed, once for distributing fertilizer of another brand, and twice for distributing pesticide (ants), and just like always, following the instructions on the bag for the spreader setting and taking into account how much ground the bag says the bag will cover, the bag went exactly as far as the bag said it would by using that setting. This is the first time I’ve ever had half the product left.My feeling is it’s more likely the bag’s instructions give the wrong broadcaster setting rather than misstate its coverage area by half, but I wasn’t going to bet my lawn on it. So I watched my lawn. It didn’t burn at all but grew. So, after two weeks, I applied the second half, setting my Scotts broadcast spreader to 4 1/2, just like the instructions say, the second half of the bag was enough to cover my entire lawn again with a little bit left over, a handful, but this time I applied it to my dry lawn when it wasn’t expected to rain again for two more days, which it did that– didn’t rain that day or the next but rained slow and steady much of the day the third day. This time, I got some slight yellowing/browning of the grass from the fertilizer, so when the rain came, I welcomed it. That was two days ago. Despite the rain, the grass hasn’t grown much. I still see brown and yellow in my grass, but not terrible, but that happens sometimes.Anyway, the only reason I bought this fertilizer instead of what I usually buy was I saw a YouTube video of a guy who had switched from what I normally use to this and swore by it, though the video didn’t show him applying it, nor did he say in what conditions he applied it, just showing what he said was his lawn afterwards, which was thick, lush, and green.I still don’t know in what conditions you’re supposed to apply this fertilizer, because after applying it to wet grass immediately before it rained resulted in such a sudden burst in growth, it led me to believe it was maybe a faster-release fertilizer that should be applied dry, especially since I only applied half of the 16,000 square-foot bag to my 16,000 square-foot lawn, but when two weeks later, I applied it to my dry lawn and didn’t water it in, it behaved the opposite, because laying down half the amount, 8,000 square-feet of fertilizer, to my 16,000 square-foot lawn definitely seemed to burn the lawn some and stunt its growth, so what would putting the entire 16,000 square-foot bag on my 16,000 square-foot lawn all at once had done? Burned it? I don’t know.I won’t be buying this fertilizer again because the bag doesn’t: one, give good enough instructions regarding application, namely whether the lawn should be dry or wet and whether to water it in or not, and if not, for how long should the lawn remain dry for optimal effectiveness, this being information that I’ve NEVER seen NOT on a bag of lawn fertilizer; two, provide accurate information about either the broadcast spreader setting or how much ground the fertilizer covers when used as directed. I won’t be buying this fertilizer again because the manufacturers failed to give me necessary information that first sent me trawling the internet to try and find it, and when I couldn’t find it there, not even on their website, left me stabbing in the dark as to what conditions to apply it in and then if it’s really 32,000 square-feet of fertilizer, not 16,000, or if the setting the bag’s instructions say to set the broadcast spreader at is wrong.The manufacturer should know that anyone buying its lawn fertilizer invests enough money, time, and energy in their lawn that they’re not going to be pleased by both missing and extremely inaccurate instructions on the bag that stand to endanger and even kill their lawn. Nobody wants to pay this kind of money to make their lawn better only to have it ruined instead.So why 3 stars and not 2 stars or 1 star? Because my lawn’s not dead, albeit not as healthy as I’d like or think it should be right now, but I believe it’ll spring back and ultimately be better off for it.

I put the Winterguard down on 14 September in the Texas panhandle. I was careful to follow the instructions on the Scott’s web site. The temperature was between 60-90 degrees. I ran the sprinklers for 10 minutes, then applied the granules to the wet grass. I moved the spreader very slowly and was careful to take my finger off the trigger before I stopped to turn, so as not to over apply any area. About 36 hours later a thunderstorm put .4” of rain on the grass in about 15 minutes.It’s been six days since the application. I always had some small weeds with stickers that come in to the left of the sprinkler control valve (see photo). As you can see, most of those weeds are gone and those that are left seem to be dying off. I think they will be completely gone in a few more days. I am very pleased with the results.This may a little early to put down winterizer in the Texas panhandle, but the nitrogen content (28) is high enough to allow more grass growth until the cold weather creeps in. The potassium content (6) is high enough to protect the lawn in case of an early snap of freezing weather. I plan to apply a second winterizer, Jonathan Green Winter Survival Lawn Food, in late October. That has a 10-0-20 NPK. The higher potassium level should see my lawn through even the coldest winter and the lower nitrogen level is stored until spring for growth at that time.I recommend Scott’s Weed & Feed Winterguard for fall weed control and lawn feeding. It sure worked for me. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the Scott’s web site and it should get the job done.

To be clear, this product is applied in the Fall, but you won’t see results until Spring.If you understand this and are willing to invest in your lawns future, it’s a great product and works very well. The past two years, I’ve had neighbors complement my lawn and actually ask me what my secret is. I do all of my own lawn-care, but I hold my own very well against those neighbors who use professional services. I’m not an expert so I won’t go into great detail, except to say that my lawn seems to wake up from the Winter dormant season just a bit earlier and greener than my neighbors. This head-start gives our lawn momentum to continue looking healthier and greener throughout the year.I recommend it, so long as you don’t mind waiting a few months to see the results.

Not having to worry about burning the lawn was one of my major issues. Greens up the grass well. Will buy again this Spring.

I will never buy another brand. This is much more safe on animals and children because it immediately breaks down and sinks into the thatch and soil. All of The Anderson products are just unbelievably good. They are like magic with technology leading the pack.

Scott’s makes good products. I’ve used them for years. Brad’s Deal’s noted a sale on Amazon for the winter-application. I clicked. Seemed reasonable. The bag was a little small. But (good thing) instead of buying a single huge-bag from Costco (with enough left-over to last seven years cluttering the garage) I got the amount I needed for a winter application at a better price than the huge bag. Oh happy day.

Put these in before a projected rain fall. Within days you’ll see the branches perk up.As a homeowner I’ve always had good results with this product.
