JULIAN WANG

JULIAN WANG

I am working 10 years in Technology Field and my passion is review to find best product

  1. First, I did not receive these products for free, I bought them. The Simply Calphalon was rated a best buy by CR and I thought that the specs for the Kitchen Aid  KitchenAid KCH1S10KD Hard Anodized Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set – Black Diamond made them worth consideration. I have been in the restaurant business for over 30 years so I have a lot of experience with pans, mostly professional sets. So that is my point of reference. The Calphalon and Kitchen Aid were in the same mid-range price point (170 – 220) in November of 2015. Truthfully they are very similar but not equal.First thing I noticed was that the Simply Calphalon were slightly smaller. Especially the Saute pan. The Kitchen Aid set is dishwasher safe, Calphalon is not. For better or worse (as you’ll read better in this case) the Kitchen Aid are heavier. The Calphalon are double-coated nonstick, the Kitchen Aid are triple-coated. Packaging for KA says oven safe to 350 degrees and Cal. says 400. Amazon says 500 for KA vs 400 for Cal. Being curious I had both in the oven at 425 for 15 minutes with no issues. Both are Hard Anodized aluminum. If you have an induction cooktop only KA is compatable. What is Hard Anodized and does it matter? Hard Anodized pans are naturally nonstick, and completely chemical-free. These pans are made with an aluminum base, which essentially gets submerged in a sulfuric acid bath that has low electrical charges running through it. As it cools, it causes the pans exterior to anodize. A hard anodized pan is extremely strong, has a long lifespan, and because it is virtually non-porous, it resists sticking. Add a few layers of non-stick coating and you have a great, relatively cheap (cost wise), pan.So what are meaningful differences? The most important, and the one most often overlooked by consumers, is that Calphalon set is 3.2mm thick and the Kitchen Aid is 4.5mm thick. Meaning (all else being equal) the Kitchen Aid is more thermally conductive and durable. And my non-scientific tests show this. The KA heats up far quicker, stays at temp longer and cooks more evenly. It’s not even close. Boiling water took about 1:30 less time in the KA and eggs cooked over medium heat in far less time. I had to lower the heat on everything I tested with the KA set. It conducted heat far better that my old Cuisinart or the Simply Calphalon. The difference in thickness also accounts for the difference in weight.Calphalon double-coated and KA has a triple-coated non-stick coating. The name is pretty explanatory but does it really matter? Yes and no. Right out of the box there is no noticible difference. However, in 4-5 years there should be a difference. Kitchen Aid’s triple-coating should last longer and look better. We’ll wait and see.The Kitchen Aid is dishwasher safe the Simply Calphalon is not. Truthfully, I don’t care what the manufacture says if you want you cookware to last don’t put it in the dishwasher. With the non-stick coating it takes little effort to clean these so it’s not worth it. Also, don’t use metal instruments and never use cooking spray. Buy silicon utensils and a oil mister. The utensils are cheap and a mister lasts forever and is less expensive than 2 cans of Pam.Real world cooking experience. After spending a week with each I gave the Calphalon to my son who recently moved out. They are nice pans and should take most of his abuse but they do not compare with the Kitchen Aid set. Cooking is quicker, food cooks more evenly and they look great. The deep black finish and flat tops are a stark change from the grey, domed cookware you usually see. I did find that the handles of the Calphalon set were slightly more comfortable. But that is subjective. Anyway who holds their pans for more than 10 seconds at a time?Neither sets handles became hot but, as expected, the handles on the lids of both became hot.Lastly, while I like the look of the flat lids on the Kitchen Aid set, they do have issues. Domed lids like those on the Cal. set allow the condensation to continually drain. The flat lids tend to collect the condensation so that when you remove them… water everywhere. You quickly learn to tilt them as you remove but it is something of which to be aware. Are they a professional set, no. But restaurants cook 300+ meals a day with people who don’t care if the pans last to the next shift. So why pay triple the price? Well, the speed at which a 6mm or 7mm thick set gets to temp. is nice but that’s the only difference. Usually, the Kitchen Aid set is slightly more than the Simply Calphalon but the they are worth the difference. So, for a mid-priced set of cookware, I don’t think you’ll find a better value than the Kitchen Aid.I hope this is helpful in your decision. Be well.

  2. I have finally learned my lesson after purchasing this set: please note that even though these state that they are dishwasher safe, they really aren’t. This is because of the Tri-poly layering, so there is a very thin layer of aluminum that is exposed along the rims. Especially on any pan that has a rolled edge. Any exposed aluminum that is put in the dishwasher will corrode due to the harsh detergents used in dishwashers. It doesn’t matter what type you use (we’ve tried them all, including a homemade one), the ingredients in the detergents that are necessary to get your dishes clean are also too harsh for aluminum. This is why those pans get a gray or white powdery residue on them when they are run through the dishwasher. We have completely eliminated all aluminum from our kitchen and use only stainless steel because of health concerns, and it just makes life a lot easier. While I understand the importance of hand washing certain things – like wooden items (utensils, cutting boards) and knives (to retain their sharp edge), I am a busy person, so now and then, if there is room, I like to put a pot or pan in the dishwasher if there is room. So when a product states that it is dishwasher safe, I would like to think they are TRULY dishwasher safe. Which to me means there is NO aluminum exposed whatsoever, because I know it will corrode in the dishwasher. Which means they are left with a worn down edge, making the stainless steel layers sharp to the touch.I know this because when we were first married, we purchased a very expensive Belgique set. We had no clue about metals and detergents or anything like that, so put them through the dishwasher all the time. Over time, the exposed aluminum wore down and the exposed edges (on the bottoms of their products) were sharp…and ugly. Last year I decided it was time to get something else so purchased a Cuisinart stainless steel set that also stated they were dishwasher safe. It was quickly apparent that they really weren’t, as they also had an exposed aluminum edge (on the top of their products) that wore down and the stainless layers also became sharp.Being very frustrated about this, I decided to do some serious research on stainless steel pots and pans – reading hundreds of reviews and articles and washing dozens of videos to learn everything I could. I finally settled on this very expensive set, which I just purchased over “greed weekend” (aka Black Friday) because they were on sale. It was a BIG investment for something as simple as stainless steel pots and pans, but the description clearly states that they are DISHWASHER SAFE, as well as their website and other sources. When they arrived, I was immediately struck at how nice these pots and pans are. So professional looking and the nicest we’ve ever owned, even after having the expensive Belgique and Cuisinart sets. There’s just something about these that look and feel more expensive. On close inspection, we couldn’t see any exposed aluminum. It all looked like they had closed the tri-poly layers with stainless steel, so everything was contained, and we were so happy to FINALLY have something that was actually 100% dishwasher safe. No more corrosion or sharp edges! Or so we thought. We have used a few of the pots/pans in the past few days and last night I had an open spot in the dishwasher so I went ahead and put one in, assured that all would be well. Fast forward to this morning when I went to unload the dishwasher and imagine my horror when I pulled out the pot and noticed the tale-tell signs of dusty white around the top edge of the pot – apparently the aluminum IS exposed, just like with the other brands, and just ONE cycle through the dishwasher made it lose it’s shine and when I rub my fingernail over the edge, I can feel (and see) the layers of stainless steel and aluminum now, because that one cycle in the dishwasher has worn it down just enough that it is now visible. So I have learned a very important lesson here – there is NO SUCH THING as 100% dishwasher safe when it comes to anything made of tri-poly layers. There must be no way for them to completely enclose the aluminum so there will always be a small strip exposed. Or maybe it needs that exposure to expand and contract with the heat, since aluminum and steel conduct heat differently.I wanted to write this review so that if you are considering making this investment, I DO highly recommend these: they are not only beautiful, but they perform fantastically. The sizes are absolutely perfect for our needs (and actually fit our burners perfectly too, which is something we’ve never experienced either). But, I STRONGLY advise that you NEVER EVER EVER put these in the dishwasher. Like ever. Never ever ever. If I could go back and not put that 1 pot in the dishwasher last night, I would. I don’t mind hand washing, but if something is advertised as dishwasher safe, then it really should be. So just be aware that it’s not entirely true.

  4. We all have some of these: chipped, scratched pots and pans that wobble on a range because of being WARPED. I’ve had enough with my pans and began research on cookeware sets. I will note here that my current cookware is the high end non-stick, with my fry pans being those bought after watching some fool on TV melt candy in a wrapper in the pan and then wiping it clean. (These pans by the way are only 8 months old and are already WARPED). For new cookware, my ONE main requirement was that they were or would be NON-WARPING. The second requirement was that they be non-stick. After some research I settled on the 14 piece of T-Fal non-stick / non-warp set. Item came well packaged and unpacking the items I was impressed with the feel of each piece: not too heavy or light even with a lid. I also noted the non-stick interior surface and the very nice looking anodized exterior. Very nice touch with the vented lids (an actual hole in the glass) and the FULL insulation of the handles. Now I mention this insulation because I have (had) cookware items that had decorative (?) metal ends on the handles that would occasionally get very warm while being used.( Nothing like grabbing a pot or pan handle that want to cook your hand medium rare.) I washed each piece and WITHOUT SEASONING, took the largest frying pan, placed it on the range on MED HEAT (about 5-6 on an electric glass top range) and let it heat up. After 2-3 minutes, I noted that the T-FAL center emblem in the pan really didn’t look like it changed much. I expected it to go from the T-FAL logo to a full red dot. Didn’t happen but it was no biggie as in the past several months I began preheating my fry pans for about 3 minutes due to their warped exterior. Next I added magarine as I was going to cook sunnyside up eggs. I was impressed to note that the margarine melted quickly AND when spread about the pan, little bubbles began to show up over the ENTIRE pan surface. This meant that the pan was heating up evenly. In went the eggs and after placing a lid on the pan I turned away to get something off the counter. Now, with my older warped fry pans I could do this same act, return to the range and begin to slowly rotate the pan to get even heating on the eggs. Not so with this T-Fal fry pan. I noted the whites turning opaque quickly and the yolks getting their whitish color meaning they would be just slightly runny. In short, these eggs came out perfect and in well over 1/2 the time from my old cookware. Even my other half was impressed. Now my next “adventures in cooking” will involve sautéing, making my alfredo sauce, grilling (this set came with a VERY NICE grill pan!) and frying. So far I am following the instructions by keeping the range heat at MED or just a bit more. Noted is that one foray into frying eggs does not provide enough experience with this cookware to turn cartwheels in the kitchen. But so far, with eggs being one of my more difficult items to make because of my other warped pans with uneven heat, this T-Fal pan is impressive. So, my rating of 4 is tentative as I will update this review within a short time after I try other pieces of this set.UPDATE:First this disclaimer: I HAVE NOT and AM NOT an employee of T-Fal or Amazon, and I have NOT been hired to write a raving review. That said, now for the update. I have had this set now for over a month and have used all but one of the pans. The total experience has been incredible. I cook out of self-defense (the other half is banned by the EPA from boiling water) and am pretty fast in the kitchen when I am cooking.- WEIGHT OF PANS: I thought the pans were a bit on the light side until I started using them. Whether it was thought of during design or not, the pans are heavy enough to withstand various cooking requirements but light enough where you don’t break your wrist when lifting.- NON STICK SURFACE: Come on now! Who in their right mind melts plastic spoons or uses an electric beater on their non-stick cookware! I believe surface of this T-Fal would take this abuse with no problem, but I happen to like my food without the taste of plastic. I’ve used nearly all the pans and found them all to be amazingly non-stick as well as sturdy. I still use butter/olive oil when sautéing or frying. I have had nothing stick to the pans nor have any of these pans lost any of their non-stick capability.- HEATING: This is the BEST part of this cookware. If you cook/have cooked with slightly warped cookware, you know the problem with hot heat spots or very little heat at all. Thus, you have to move the pan around a bit to get yours items cooked. Each of the pans in this T-Fal set has VERY even heat distribution. There is a “plate” on the bottom of the pans that distributes the heat evenly. I have found that because of this, I’ve noted shorter cooking times on various items AND I now cook on a lower heat settings NOTE: This T-Fal cookware set will cause you to change how your cook and for how long. The even heat distribution is stunning. ALSO, I do preheat my pans (except for boiling water) and use only wooden or high heat tolerant silicone utensils..- STORAGE OF THE COOKWARE: I don’t stack this cookware. Instead I hang it up. This simply helps prolong the life of my investment.Overall, I am very impressed with this cookware. Even my other half (known for making ANGRY little pellets called hamburgers), has begun to learn that this cookware can even make her a decent cook. And yes, I bit on the late night adverts showing the frying pans melting plastic spoons and candy in wrappers and magically not sticking. I bought 3. Within 90 days they either lost their non-stick capability, began to warp, or both. Some people are gourmet cooks; others have trouble boiling water. This cookware will holdup very well and serve both very well. My motto is that you get what you pay for. And you WILL get more than you’ve paid for this set. I raise my rating to 5 stars and I do recommend as a BUY.

  5. 6. I’m not one to write many reviews but with this cookware set I felt compelled to share my fantastic experience with this pan set. I am about a month in since receiving the set and I have been thrilled with the results of my cooking every time I use the pans. I chose yellow which looks sharp and the color really pops in my kitchen. The ceramic is well fabricated with no blemishes or nicks. Handles are a nice thickness and seem to be fastened quite well. When guests come over they are always impressed with the overall look and quality of the pans. It’s not just all looks… the quality is superb!Let me stress that I treat and take care of all my cookware very diligently. I am always cognizant of never abusing any cookware like using excessively high heat, scraping with wrong utensils, banging together or leaving in a pile of muck in the sink, etc. I even obtained a set of silicone cooking utensils which are gentle on the ceramic finish. The pans are very sturdy and lay perfectly flat on my glass cooktop. For the density of a ceramic pan they are relatively light and easy to handle unlike a cast iron.Performance is great, just allow a couple of minutes to get the pan to the right heat level. Set on a medium-high to get the pan warmed up then lower/adjust as the ceramic absorbs and maintains the right heat levels. These ceramic pans are similar to cast iron in the respect that you must allow time for the pan to get heated up FIRST. I can’t stand when people just put down a pan, turn on the heat and throw the food in immediately. You must get the pan somewhat hot first so the food begins to sizzle or sear once it hits… and again, NEVER leave any pan on high heat.Cleaning is a breeze. I use a soft nylon brush or even my bare hands with a little dish soap and the pans clean right off and look like new after drying. This set comes with handy storage racks that you can place in your cupboard or shelf so the pans lay on their sides. I was also pleasantly surprised with the pan lid hangers which come with hooks so you can hang the pan lids on the back of a cabinet door. These were terrific storage and space-saving features that were a bonus. This set is a great find for day to day home use and the price range is very reasonable especially for the level of quality and amount of pieces included. I definitely recommend this set for so many reasons!

  7. This is a very expensive set of cookware. It is a joy to cook with and a breeze to clean. However, this set arrived with 12” lid that was totally out of round. The metal rim could not fit onto the 8 qt pot. Clearly a manufacturing defect. When I called All Clad for a replacement they basically told me to Piss up a Rope! They said that they couldn’t replace the lid because I used it. I let them know that I couldn’t use it because it didn’t fit, but they refused to budge. All Clad SUCKS! Thank god for amazon customer service! They have given me the customer service that All Clad refuses to.

  8. This cookware is amazing – durable, non-stick (easy to clean interior AND exterior), scratch resistant. If considering purchase, PLEASE read: I investigated a burning smell coming from the kitchen. It was a skillet from this set that had been sitting on a gas range – medium high heat with a utensil still in it. The utensil completely MELTED (into a puddle!) and the fryer was black inside and out. A mess! I was sure I’d have to throw it away. But no!…I let it cool, then soaked it in soapy water for about 30 minutes. As I washed it, it came absolutely CLEAN – no hard scrubbing. I did not re-season it, but next use, it performed PERFECTLY! Now, after several months of daily use – still like new! Substantial cookware: not as heavy as cast iron, but has good weight to it. This cookware is built to last.

  9. Used this set at an AirBnB last year and loved it. Bought the big skillet when we got home from that trip and when my ceramic pots and pan set died out on me (everything started sticking) I ordered this and replaced my set. I freaking love this set. I have a glass top range and the bottom in these is so smooth, it will never scratch it. Distributes heat very well. Cleans up amazing. I love that it’s been a month or so and I use them every single day and they still look brand new. When I say they clean up nice, they really clean up nice. The handles are soft and don’t get hot. The color is very pretty. It’s a great value. I feel like these are made as well as the sets from 50 years ago. You know the ones your Mom got as a wedding gift and still uses? These are gonna be like those. Highly recommend!

  10. i got them on black friday for a really good price and i LOVE they are so ez to clean great cooking with them

  11. I LOVE this cookware, I cannot say it enough. Family members and friends who have used also agree they are the best pans for at home. I’m no expert chef but I love to cook and a high quality pan makes all the difference.Heat distribution makes all the difference, i’ve never seen water boil so fast and everything cooks evenly regardless of where it is in the pan. The handles never get hot even on the highest setting.18 months later and they still look brand new, I do no stack and I wash the bigger pans by hand and place the others in the dishwasher. Love the dark color and for contrast.

  12. Amazon did a great job in choosing the manufacture. These are great pots and pans and worth the value. 9/10.

  13. This is now my favorite pot to cook with. Soups, pasta, you name it I can cook it in this pot and it cleans super easy!

  14. For years, I had a full set of “professional” (i.e. famous chef, always on TV) not-nonstick pots & pans. What made them professional, I think, was their extreme weight. They were hard to lift and handle, extremely hard to clean no matter how much spray or oil I used (I learned early to just soak them immediately and leave them at least overnight). Hated them! Finally gave them away and got these and OH what a blessing! They handle, cook and clean SO MUCH BETTER than the ones I had before! I have zero complaints about this set. If you’re looking for a good nonstick set, do not spend hundreds of dollars. Buy these! I highly recommend!

  15. My mom has these for years and I saw how great hers works and I wanted a set that was bought for me as a Christmas gift. My mom was excited I got the red dot skillet. The red dot means it is preheated. Easy to clean and non stick and food tastes great, the ny strip steak tasted as good as it did on the grill.

  16. Pros: Skillet is just the right size to cook for one or two and has a nice heft to it while not being too heavy to easily wash. The lid fits securely on top and has an easy to grasp handle. Con: You have to attach ( by screwing ) the handles to skillet and top.

  17. I really like my new cookware. The last set I had were all nonstick. I used those for 20 years and they were still usable except for 1 frying pan. From the look, feel and function of this cookware, they will last me the rest of my life.I really like the way they feel in my hands. They sear beautifully. Very easy to clean as well. All I need to do now is complete my set.

  18. I just have to say, we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these pans. I bought a set of the pans only during the xmas sale and loved them so much I came back to buy a whole set with pots and paid full price – they are worth every penny. Everything advertised about them is true. They are, hands down, the best pans I have ever owned.

  19. I love cooking again. Heats quickly, easy cleanup. Recommend you watch the videos from All-Clad on how to maintain your cookware.

  20. I bought a set for myself when I bought my house and have not been disappointed. They are great with not sticking, hold up well to heat, don’t discolor no matter what we cook in it and is sooooo easy to clean. I liked them so much, I bought my parents a set for their new kitchen. They have been happy with them as well! These are literally the best pots and pans I have owned.
