  1. I have owned HP printers forever. Our old HP all in one was still going after 12 years but the scanner bed had gotten dirty and I also decided it was time to upgrade because I needed double sided printing and also the ability to print wirelessly from my iPhone and iPad. A nearby Office Depot was closing its doors and having a big blow out sale to get rid of all its inventory so I decided to go look at printers thinking I could get a screaming deal. I talked to one of the sales associates about my needs and she said this was a very popular model that offered all the features I want and then some. They had it marked down from $180 to about $153 on sale. Before I bought it I do what I always do and checked Amazon and was shocked to find that the exact same printer in the exact same package was only $99 with Prime! I bid farewell to Office Depot (no wonder they’re closing) and went right home and ordered it!I have to say, so far I REALLY LOVE this printer! First of all, it was the easiest printer to set up EVER!! I mean, I truly couldn’t believe it! I’m a gadget tech nerd (built my own PC) and was prepared to have to spend an hour getting it all unpacked, turned on, calibrated, set up on my network and also connected to my devices for wireless printing. That’s what I’m used to. Set up of this printer BLEW MY MIND with how simple it was! Literally, you take it out of the box and remove all foam and plastic etc., plug it into the wall, press power, insert the ink (SO simple) and follow the instructions on screen to align the cartridges. Once it was aligned the touch screen informed me to go to hp.com/setup to download the drivers I would need. My computer/network automatically detected the printer and knew just what drivers I needed. Download and setup was a breeze! You can use the provided disk instead but I didn’t even remove it from the sleeve. The one thing I would say about HP and their software is that they tend to over do it. My recommendation is to select the option that enables you to choose which additional programs you want installed instead of letting HP do it for you. I always get way more than I bargain for and end up uninstalling a lot of the “bloatware” programs that I don’t use that just take up HD space like HP photo etc. I use photoshop. There is an option for just the basic drivers that you can select. Your printer will work just fine with those and you won’t get blogged down with unwanted software. Either way works great though. I tried both. The driver setup took 5 minutes. Then I got on my iPhone and downloaded the HP ePrint app which IMMEDIATELY recognized and connected to my printer all on its own! You can use it to print from your photos, the web, email and the cloud. AWESOME!!! That was it! In about 12 minutes from the box I was completely set up, connect and printing! Here are some other things I love about this printer:- Fastest setup of any printer ever (yes I know I already mentioned this but it deserves repeating). No having to manually enter IP addresses or anything like that!- Design is very sleek and modern. I love the all black with little color screen! It’s pretty sexy as printers go!- Small/slim profile. For everything this printer does and how well/quickly it does it, it really is quite small! WAY smaller than my old HP all in one!- Touch screen is really high quality! I often get frustrated with touch screens at check out stands and elsewhere because they’re not very sensitive to your finger or pressing down in one spot causing a neighboring button to be selected. That is NOT the case with this touch screen. I find that it’s very sensitive and accurate and also the display is crisp and beautiful!- AUTOMATIC DOUBLE SIDED PRINTING AND SCANNING. HALLELUJAH!- Printing is very fast and the print quality is excellent, even and especially with photos!- I LOVE that this printer only needs one cable (unless you want to use the fax feature as well) and works so well wirelessly!- Printing from the app on my mobile devices is my new favorite thing- Unlike my old printer, this guy is whisper quiet when it’s printing. It’s a little thing, but I live with an autistic 4 year old and a husband who sounds like he’s calling in air support for a military strike when he talks on the phone so…sometimes the little things make a big difference!- Scan quality is really fabulous!Honestly, I rarely give 5 star reviews to things, but this printer really does deserve it, from price point to set up to functionality and features. I HIGHLY recommend this printer for all your in home office needs! And no, I didn’t get it for free or at a discount. I paid full price for it and I would do it again! I hope this helps someone else who is looking for an office upgrade!UPDATE 1/21/17 – After a couple weeks I started having issues with this printer going offline spontaneously and the only way I could seem to get it back online to was by restarting my computer. Around that time we also bought a Roku 4 and started having trouble with streaming. The signal was dropping all the time. I finally realized that it was because of our router, which, while a great work horse for many years, was getting seriously old in “tech years” and needed to be replaced. I bought a dual band Asus router and ever since I installed it we have not only had flawless streaming but the printer now stays “online” all the time! If you’re having this issue with it going offline, I would look at your network setup before you blame the printer itself.

  2. The first one they sent me did not work with my HP printer, but they sent another one (I returned the 1st one). They were very cordial, and responded quickly to fix the problem.

  3. I purposely bought the HP envy pro series printer (you can see my review on that , great purchase) with knowing there was a easy way to find the exact ink I’d need in mind. Being in business, far to many times have I had to search for ink that has been discontinued for a product. This series of ink is pretty compatible across the board with the Envy series. The ink is pretty does well , paper makes the difference, get good paper or the paper your meant to use. -Trust- There are larger cartridges you can by , they will say xl by the label, however if you aren’t a power user just buy the normal stock ones because if it’s not used regularly/heavy it will just dry up. It’s good ink for a good machine, easy to install takes literally two seconds. My only gripe would be knowing what these cost at wholesale through one of MY wholesalers ,but I just have no need to buy in a bulk purchase, they should drop the price maybe a few dollars more and it would be a win/win for everyone. The price is spot on, the sellers still turns a decent profit and you get mor clientele being you’d have the best price for this ink. TL;DR: Great product, great ink, fair price could do a bit better, easy install, get the proper paper for best results and not waste your ink. Good luck & enjoy!

  4. Easy to install

  5. Cost way to much

  6. No equivalent to authentic HP brand printer cartridges. No issues with install or recognition by HP INKJET printer. XL version really does greatly increase the number of pages you can print. The extra cost is well worth it.

  7. Works just as advertised.Great price.

  8. My old HP printer gave out and since I’d had such good service from the brand, I bought this as a replacement. I needed all-in-one capability, which this printer has–scanning, copying, printing- and I wanted wireless capability. For some reason, I felt like the instructions to set this up to get the wireless capability started were just not as clear as they could have been. I finally resorted to just common sense after some frustrating tries, and got it working, but frankly, I still don’t know how I got there. No matter. Once it was connected wirelessly it worked perfectly. The print quality is great, it’s responsive, and it does exactly what I need it to do. It’s a simple printer for home use. Other than the annoying matter of the instructions, there’s one other small detail that owners should be aware of: there’s a small, pull-out extension to the finished print tray that’s only about three inches wide and rotates out to extend maybe six inches or so. It’s not the width of the fixed print tray. It looks like an option. It’s not. Use it. If you don’t, you’re liable to find your print job has shot across the room all over the floor. Ask me how I know. First glance, the finished print tray appears to be long enough to keep the printed pages stacked in place, but it just isn’t. Without that little extension rotated out, you’re going to have to pick up your print job off the floor. OK, I know; it’s an inexpensive printer. But another 50 cents worth of plastic to keep this from happening wouldn’t have bankrupted Hewlett Packard.

  9. I do love this printer. It prints fast, the touch screen is nice, has unique features, it prints from your phone, great quality, etc. A couple of things that bother me— not enough to send it back but just enough to want to warn people. It does not have a spot to hold papers that you’ve printed. So unless you’re standing in front of it ready to catch the paper, your prints will fall on the floor. SUPER annoying. Second, the ink doesn’t last for that long. It’s not horrible but it’s a shorter lifespan per cartridge than I’m used to. Lastly, the paper tray does not fit much paper. I like to shove as much paper as I can at once so that I don’t have to do it for a while. But this paper tray holds about 50 pages max. Again, these are little annoyances that mean a lot to me. Overall satisfied with it for it’s price but just be warned if these thing would really bother you.

  10. Just bought a new printer and this was super easy to install. Thanks!

I have been a faithful HP user for the last 5 years due in no small part to their quality and reliability. My Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (n911g) finally died after 4 years of home use. So, after doing some web searching, I decided to fall back to the highly recommended HP Scanjet Pro 6978.After 3 days of frustrating effort in trying to implement the wifi printer function, I was able to successfully enable it in my new printer/scanner. Seeing and experiencing the frustrations shown in purchase reviews, I decided to take the time to layout what worked for me.The bottom line is that HP Smart was not detecting that my computer was set up to not share devices. The basic software at the HP Customer Support web page did and corrected this. More detail below. As background, I had used HP Smart with my previous 8600 printer and became frustrated with it, so I stopped using it and started using just the basic printer software. Also, seeing the Instant Ink “horror stories” in the purchase reviews, I was determined not to let this happen during the install. As it turned out this latter fear was totally un-founded and I was easily able to bypass the Instant Ink offer. In retrospect, I believe HP Smart is a good addition to the basic software, however, over the years my 5-year-old laptop has been subjected to a lot of additional security and other software which I believe HP Smart was unable to detect and correct. Once corrected, I plan to continue with HP Smart and believe the underlying issue was also the source of the problem I had with it with my prior printer.During the initial setup, I was easily able to get the printer into my network (solid unblinking blue wifi indicator on the printer). Where the 3 days of frustration happened was in getting the computer to recognize the printer! Once I gave up on the HP Smart wifi and other USB and ethernet solutions, I decided to go back to finding the basic 6978 software. On the HP support web page I found a it through web link HPEasyStart_14_6_6. Using it led to another piece of software (Full_Webpack-40.16.1234_1-OJ6970_Full_Webpack) that completed the installation on my laptop. I believe I had to start an HP account for this as well as use the sharing functions. What the basic software detected was that my computer was not allowing my devices to share. Once it corrected this, the software installation went quite quickly. I believe this unsharing was done by my security software in order to eliminate the risks of remote hacking. I may very well go back (or have to when the AVG software scans again) and limit the sharing to only the devices I want to access the printer.

  12. Buy this if you like ugly scans and want to waste a day+ of your life fighting buggy install software. I spent at least that long setting this up on 3 windows laptops. The install process fails in different ways on each device, even on each separate attempt. I made at least 5 attempts per device till both scanning and printing were working at the same time. Each attempt is waiting on 5minute to infinite progress bard. What on earth can take minutes when electrons are flying at the speed of light?? Either printing or scanning wouldn’t work most of the time, just one or the other. I tried the hp stupid software first, failed almost every time in different ways, even though it saw the printer on the network. Be careful not to use an Wifi 6 AX access point, or it’ll silently fail. I tried installing the separate drivers as well when hp stupid wouldn’t work. That didn’t work either, searching the network forever even after it found the printer once. On one device I couldn’t even log into their dumb hp+ service as part of the install. My other device I started after the first one got stuck already registered, while the first device was still waiting infinitely. I won’t go into all the hundreds of failure modes. Suffice it to say I’m a programmer and it took me a day. Just getting the printer working is easy, you don’t even need the hp stupid software, but if you want scan to computer to work, you’re in for a world of pain. I don’t care about any of the rest of the stupid features. Anyways, I think I finally have it working. Until it breaks. The 8610 also randomly forgot how to do scan to computer, so remains to be seen. The other downfall is the scanner. The quality of the scans is atrocious, heavy moire patterns when scanning any printed material, which is all material these days, since film photos don’t exist anymore. No settings to fix it. Even scanning at 1200dpi and trying every conceivable downsampling mode can’t fix the moire. In some cases it just returns random pure white pixels all over the image (maybe it’s point sampling the white of the paper in between the dithered printing??). I think the sensor just uses zero anti-aliasing, which makes it practically unusable for any quality scanning. For scanning odd documents it’s fine if you don’t mind the ugly blurry, noisy results. Also the jpeg compression is atrocious. Coupled with the moire it gives some impressively terrible scans. The 8610 suffers from some of these issues, but not as bad. 9018 is just horrible. Also, 8610 was way more convenient. It would scan to a folder, in jpeg or multi-page pdf, and open that folder on your machine, ready to drag and drop into an email or whatever. Not so with 9018. It scans only in jpeg to the crappy windows scan and fax program, where it’s extra steps to get your file into an email, no pdf option, doesn’t scan from document feeder, only the flatbed, crap quality, etc etc. How can HP be THIS crap? It would be so easy to fix these things, and instead they made this WORSE than the ancient 8610. HOW?? Using the scan and fax software, some of these things are solvable, like document feeder, but not the scan quality, it seems, since I think it’s a hardware problem, too sharp point sampling. Though, interestingly, somehow the copy function doesn’t suffer from this moire. No idea how, but no such setting seems available from scanning software. Also can’t do multi-page pdf’s with windows scan and fax like 8610 could. Just worse in every way. From the menus it also seems like there’s no way to stop it from shutting off completely every 8 hours. However, it hasn’t shut off in a couple of days with no activity, and I can print to it. Strange. But good, because that would be a dealbreaker.

  13. I got this printer to replace our old one that would no longer pick up paper from the paper tray.So far, it has printed flawlessly, though it does suffer from the same thing that all inkjet printers do, the SUPER EXPENSIVE ink dries out before it all gets used. In addition to this, it seems that HP likes to update the firmware periodically to prevent 3rd party and refilled cartridges from being used, locking you in to using HP cartridges. Even knowing this, I still would have purchased this printer. The print quality is very good, having printed a few documents and some pictures. The print speed is very good for an inkjet printer. It has good connectivity with WiFi and LAN built in, so it is easy to print over the network once it is set up.All things considered, I am happy with this printer, but wish that HP would stop trying to lock people in to using their print cartridges.

  14. The printer is a good portable printer, compact and easy to transport. The instructions for initial unpacking and preparing of the printer are fine, but the instructions for connecting to an Apple iOS device (computer, iPhone, or iPad) are virtually non-existent. If you are connecting via your home network, you can decipher the minimal instructions without too much trouble, but a direct connection between device and printer via a private network (the most useful for portability) is more difficult to figure out. The “on line manual” provides very little help. I finally found the needed information in the FAQs section.

  15. I like this printer but like many others, it tells you to replace the ink far too soon. I’ve now printed about 30 pages on the “empty” black cartridge. At least it is willing to print if I smash the “OK” button.

  16. This HP 7958e inkjet printer has met all of my expectations. The main thing I wanted is excellent quality photo prints that look like what’s on my computer’s screen. The 7958e has met that requirement in spades. Amazing photo quality using just one tri-color ink cartridge and one black ink cartridge. No banding at all. I did use the “best” setting.I put 2 sheets of paper in the document feeder and pressed “copy” on the LCD panel. The first sheet was still being scanned when printing started. IOW, the 7958e did not wait for the entire sheet to be fed thru the document feeder before starting to print. Really fast copying! The second sheet was fed thru the document feeder and was printed quickly.I printed 2 sheets of text from Libre Writer in my PC. The printing occurred quickly without having to wait for the printer to do a lot of gyrations. Excellent print quality. Couldn’t ask for more. This HP 7958e appears to be identical to the HP 7955e printer, but is a lot cheaper at $139.91 on Amazon right now, 11/12/22. I believe it is the 7955e printer but made for discount retail outlets like Sam’s Club. I’m going to love this printer.

  17. I inserted object into my HP 6978 when the previous cartridge ran low. It worked well immediately, which I appreciate. I’m not sure how long it will last but I am pleased that it performs as expected from the start.

  18. Hideously expensive here … and everywhere else. I still find that OEM ink cartridges work better so I’m willing to pay the higher cost. I’m retired and no longer use as much ink as I once did, so the high cost is less of a problem. More more intensive users might find it more of a factor.

  19. I had no problem setting this printer up. That being said, I am a millennial. No offense to the older generation, but if you are not one who is privy to technology or its many advances, this printer will not be the easiest for you to set up… To make things easier for those that might struggle with setup, here they are in layman terms:1. Take Printer out of the box.2. Take off all wrapping.3. Plug it in and turn it on.4. Slide up the back printer paper tray.5. The blue marker in the middle of the space on this this tray, needs to be slid over to the left, before you can add paper. You might have to pull it forward and up before you can slide.6. Open the bottom panel, open the inner door, unwrap the ink and insert the cartridges as directed by the illustrated guide.7. Get your smartphone, because this is how you are going to be setting this up. If you don’t have one, then you have to go to 123.hp.com and set it up that way, but it’s highly recommended to use the app on the phone.8. Download HP Smart from the apple store or the play store.9. Select the first option to set up a new printer. As long as the Wi-Fi light on the printer is flashing and the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth light is on, on the smartphone you should return a result of your new printer.10. From there, set up your new account or log in with your current HP account if you already have one.’This took me all of five minutes to do, not long at all. Very easy set up for someone who is technology-savvy or who is able to follow instructions well.Make sure to hit that you are replacing your old printer if that is what you are doing as well. If you want to set it up on a desktop, you can go to 123.hp.comTo me, this isn’t hard to, but I do think that HP could have laid out the instructions much better than they did. It’s like they assumed that everyone would understand to get out their smartphones and set up their printer like there was no problem at all. They need to work on that and make it more user-friendly.The printer itself is great. Nothing is broken, connected easily, looks very nice, and is printing wonderfully. I would highly recommend this printer to others as long as they are comfortable with this type of setup process.

  20. So far zero complaints about this little printer, exactly what we needed for the occasional at-home printing for school, small business, personal use. Very easy set up, via the HP App, for blue tooth printing. Prints quickly and the App is easy to use. Easy to use push button printing, from a paper copy, as well. Color printing is true to the original, good vivid colors. We’ve been using this printer quite often and so far zero issues.I used this copier to print a copy of a a bright colorful flyer, that I then took to a copy shop (as we needed many copies) and the prototype printed from this machine was vivid and true to the original – all the flyers made from it turned out great. So it works well for that type of job, too.Paper tray is stand up in the back of the machine, so allow room for that if setting this on a counter under cabinets or on an enclosed shelf. Includes free ink for 6 months; with heavier use I think this machine will go through ink fairly quickly? Our use in occasional and for that use it appears an ink cartridge will last a decent amount of time. One thing to note is that the “catch arm” to hold onto the printed paper is fairly small and so far anything I’ve printed has gracefully wafted from the printer to the floor. Not worth taking a star away, but still something to mention.

  21. These are about the same price here as at any local office supply house … they are hideously expensive anywhere. However, the original equipment cartridges always seem to work better than the less expensive knockoffs. I’m not a heavy user of my printer since I retired, so the higher cost is negligible over the long haul.

  22. For my small business, I depend on HP and Amazon to keep me supplied with all the necessary

  23. Very easy to set up and to connect to MacBook Air and iPhone. Works very well.

  24. I read a million reviews on printers. They all have their issues so it’s a tough decision. I decided to go with ease of setup and this one was definitely easy. Overall I have been pretty happy with it. One of my main complaints is the flimsiness of the tray for the paper. I feel like I could break it every time I pull it out. So far it’s hasn’t broken though and it’s been about a year. It’s also slow to recognize that the paper is out. Takes a good 30 seconds to let you remove the tray and refill. Refill tray holds about 150-200 pgs I would guess. Having to be on the ink plan is annoying but I do alot of printing so it works out ok for me. They send ink as soon as you’re starting to run low so I have never run out. It loses connection to WiFi about 3x a week or so. Not sure why. Otherwise it’s a decent printer.

  25. I am very happy with this printer. After reading the reviews I took a leap of faith and ordered it. I am not a “techy” type person. I was very leery about the set up but it was fantastic. I am using this as a personal printer and I also work from home so I need a reliable printer. My last printer (HP 8500 series) was a true work horse. I had that for over 10 years. I also purchased a USB cable so I can use it wired to my personal desktop and wirelessly with my company laptop. I was amazed at how fast everything was to set up. It forces the set up of HP+ Smart software but I declined everything I could. They are getting to invasive with wanting to know all my usage, etc. The free cartridges do not fit my usage either. Hope this helps you to make an informed decision.

  26. Purchased these after I canceled HP Instant Ink program. They work fine so far. I don’t print a lot so the one test will be if the ink lasts or dries out. I love the fact that it included one black and one color cartridge.

  27. I will only use HP products in my HP 8720 copier.

  28. No wonder my package arrived late. I opened the bag and instantly got an overwhelming smell of weed. The ink is fine but someone was having a grand ole time while packaging this one.

  29. Good product, fair price, and quick delivery.

  30. I purchased this and couldn’t figure out how to print from my word document. I wanted to connect to customer service, but that wasn’t happening. I couldn’t find a phone number for them but was encouraged to participate in a chat. The chat consisted of me clicking on a problem, and then being prompted to refine what my issue was. At no time was there a real person on the chat. It was computer generated pop ups that led to very generic answers. I was told that the only way that I can get my printer to print a Word document was to send myself via e-mail. Then I can print from the e-mail. So I thought I would just send it (printer) back. I went to Best Buy and told them what had happened to me. They told me that all I needed was a cord to go from my printer to my computer. That worked very well. Why couldn’t HP have told me that? Why can’t you contact them? I do not like their customer service at all, but the printer is OK and it’s working well.
