How To Buy The Best Home Office Shredders In 2022

Not only do the best shredders safeguard your privacy and security, but they’re also required by many businesses, especially if you’re dealing with sensitive information. Currently, shredders are more affordable than they used to be, and many of them come with additional features like advanced shredding techniques and the ability to securely shred credit cards, for example.

Unlike some purchases, buying a paper shredder is a straightforward process. There aren’t many aspects to consider. The only thing you need to think about is how well and efficiently each model can perform its basic functions.
1. Home office shredder types

Strip-cut, cross-cut, and micro-cut are the three basic types of shredders. Strip-cut models produce long strips and are the least secure, whereas cross-cut versions produce smaller strips and are regarded as mid-level in terms of security. Micro-cut shredders are the safest since they shred documents into small, confetti-like pieces. The micro-cutting process is slower, but if document security is a necessity, the extra time is worth it.
2. The size of waste bin

Do you want a small paper shredder that can be easily stored under your desk or in a closet? Then you must take into account the capacity of the waste bin.

Because a smaller bin can store fewer paper shreds, it must be emptied more often. When you only shred a few documents per week, this isn’t an issue. However, if you use a shredder at your home office and shred frequently, emptying the container every day can be troublesome.

A typical home shredder holds 3 to 5 gallons of paper. The number of paper shreds or strips of paper it can hold is determined by the shredder’s security level. Long strips from a strip-cut shredder take up more space than smaller paper particles.
3. Jamming

Most paper shredders are capable of jams. Cheaper versions are more likely to jam than more expensive models, while some jams are easier to remove than others. Some of the most expensive shredders have guarantees against paper jams.

Now, we present to you a list of the home office shredders in 2022.

The Home Office Shredders Tips and Advice

FAQ for Home Office Shredders In 2022

1. What is the maximum number of sheets that a shredder can shred?

Only a few documents can be shredded per pass by a home office shredder. The sheet capacity of a shredder is the number of documents it can shred in one pass.

Shredders with basic features can shred five to ten ordinary A4 documents at once. On the other hand, higher-end models can shred more papers.

Instead of shredding the maximum number of documents, we recommend shredding one less document. This is because you might shred a document that is a little thicker than usual, or a paper that is folded in half, resulting in a heavier pile.
2. How loud are home office shredders?

Standard large home office shredders produce noise equivalent to a normal conversation. Smaller under-desk shredders can be as quiet as 50 decibels (dB), which is comparable to the sound of rain falling on a driveway and well below the 85 dB danger level. The maximum decibel level that the human ear can take for more than 8 hours without causing damage to the inner ear is 85 dB.

Paper shredders are inherently quite noisy. Regardless of the brand you choose, it will make a certain amount of noise. You have a good chance of getting a noise-controlling machine if you’re willing to spend a little more money. Some high-end shredders claim to function silently, and you might get too close to that.
3. Why is my home office shredder creaking?

Dust and paper particles accumulate over time between the rotating cutting blades of your shredder, causing weird noises and decreased cutting speeds. This dust is created during the paper cutting process. Oiling your home office shredder is one solution to this problem.

Also, the dated mechanical design of older paper shredders can simply be the reason for noisy operation. This is most noticeable while shredding paper since a lot of noise is produced. Simply, outdated shredding blade designs cut through paper less efficiently while burning more energy. Users benefit from significantly quieter operation and enhanced convenience while using much less energy than current technology used in the design of paper shredders.
4. Can a home office shredder have more advanced features?

Of course, just because you are purchasing a paper shredder doesn’t mean you have a single function. Many of these machines come with a number of advanced features that will enhance and improve your shredding experience. Here are a few examples:

– Shred credit cards, for heavy cards and plastics, paper clips.

– Anti-jamming technology keeps the feed tray clear.

– Pull-out bins, which are actually quite common.
5. Should I buy a home office shredder with a cross-cut or a micro-cut blade?

Cross-cut models (also known as diamond-cut models) are more secure than strip-cut models because the paper is cut into small, confetti-style fragments that are more difficult to reassemble. The most secure form is micro-cut, as these shredders produce even smaller confetti particles that are very hard to put back together.

Final Though

While the conversation around security these days tends to focus on the digital side of things, it’s essential that you cover all of your bases, including sensitive and confidential documents.

Even the most innocuous documentation can cause chaos if it falls into the wrong hands. To safeguard against identity theft, you should shred all documents containing sensitive personal information, such as bank statements. This is where a home office shredder can help. Every workspace setup, whether it’s a home study or a commercial, open-plan office, should include a shredder that meets your needs.

And each of the home office shredders we’ve mentioned above is a great offering in the market.

  1. In general, this is a great shredder that lives up to the specifications the manufacturer represents. I haven’t found anything that this shredder won’t accept and shred within its list of materials it can shred. What I like:This shredder has shredded everything I have placed into it, which is almost 100% single sheets of paper. As a test of its manganese steel blades, I shredded a sheet of labels to see if they would get stuck in the blades. Happily, no label adhesive was found after shredding the labels. I wouldn’t recommend making it a habit of shredding labels, but it’s nice to know that I can on occasion without worrying about fouling the shredder blades.I like the 8 gallon bin. As another user has already noted, the bin is not really meant to accept plastic liners, but I have found that 8 gallon trash bags work well as a bin liner without the bags tearing or having to stretch them beyond the limits of the plastic bag material.Power and bin sensor switches seem to be heavier duty that switches I have seen used on other products coming out of China. Kudos to the manufacturer for at least sticking to that level of quality.I haven’t bought a SOHO shredder in quite some time, so it was very refreshing to have the ability to manually operate the shredder motor in both forward and reverse.Compared to the other shredders I have owned in the past, this one is a clear winning in the noise department. It practically whispers when I do a side-by-side comparison with the older, cross-cut shredder I have. What I dislike:The power switch cap is a little too small around its diameter, and I notice it sticks from time to time when powering the shredder on and off. Not a deal killer, but it starts the thinking that maybe corners were cut in other parts of the manufacturing process to compensate for the quality parts used to make this machine. The plastic used for the bin is very thin. When using the handle to pull the bin from the shredder, or insert it back into the shredder, a lot of flex in the bin plastic is noticed. I am thinking that the bin will probably be the first point of failure on this shredder since the plastic will probably fracture or shatter if it is pulled out too many times. On a related note to the thin plastic used for the bin, the rest of the plastic body parts are so light that the shredder is very top heavy. Trying to roll the shredder on its provided casters is not a good idea since the shredder wants to tip over. I found it easier to lift it off the floor to reposition it. Be sure to eat your Wheaties before lifting this shredder, though; it weighs over 40 pounds. My biggest dislike is the cost. I will assume that the steel used for the blades, motor and their respective frames add to the cost of this shredder. I will also grant that P5 blades will cost more to manufacture. To have this cost over $300 when the rest of the shredder was clearly cost engineered to help lower the total cost to manufacture this shredder means that the manufacturer, all the supply chain in the middle and Amazon are making tidy profits. I hope this shredders lasts long enough to justify the cost to buy it.

  2. This Wolverine microcut shredder is all it’s description says it is. It is incredibly quiet, powerful, and fast. it’s a silent beast. Well built, despite what some of the naysayers allege, and did I say quiet, it really is. I’m told there is very little needed maintenance, perhaps a lubricant sheet every 50 or so loads, I was advised. It is big and heavy, but rolls nicely on the casters. There was no assembly needed, ready to go out of the box. Another awesome feature is the wonderful customer support team, who reply promptly and really care that the customer is happy. I had what I felt was a very minor issue, but they treated it like it was the most important thing they were dealing with. Couldn’t be happier in all respects. Highly recommend.

  3. Very nice shredder but I have another one that is just as good and was about $75 cheaper. Still this is a nice product.

  4. I bought this because we had a huge amount of sensitive documents to shred and I couldn’t find a mobile shredder in our area. I was a bit apprehensive as there were some less than positive reviews, but there were positive ones also. The item took a bit longer to get here than promised “due to weather”, but arrived in good condition, well packed. I didn’t try 18 sheets at a time, primarily because other reviewers cautioned not to. I usually did around 10-12. No issues with jamming or overheating at all. It is very quiet! I probably shredded 2 hours at a time and in two days filled up 8 1/2 33 gallon trash bags. It does have a small 6 Gallon receptacle which others complained about. It didn’t bother me. I just brought my 33 gallon garbage can in, lined it with garbage bag and dumped shredded paper in. Very little mess that way. The one thing I do not like is the difficulty in getting the receptacle seated properly. I found the best way was to snug it up against my knees and pull unit forward until it snapped in. Not sure if it is just this unit that has the issue or if they all are difficult. If there is a weak point this is it, otherwise great product! What did I do with all that shredded material? Found a neighbor who does shipping and he took it all! And another neighbor offered me a job shredding her stuff 😎. I declined, love this shredder but don’t need another job 😂

  5. So far this is the best shredder I’ve ever owned by a wide margin! Glad I spent a little bit more money on a much higher quality product (I got the 10min one too), this is the best bang for your buck!I’ve had a few shredders before in the ~$40 range (mostly Staples ones) that broke pretty quickly — this one really doesn’t cost that much more, comparatively. They’d only be able to do like 5 sheets (nowhere near 12) and eventually plastic bits would start falling out of the insides and it would stop working. If you put in like 4 sheets and folded one accidentally, those would jam immediately. Then the jams would be hard to clear and could damage the shredder. Or you’d run it for like a minute and it would start overheating already and start malfunctioning. So far, with this shredder, in a few weeks’ time period, I already shredded more than I have in the past 5 years combined. Probably did like ~10,000 sheets of lots of old documents. That’s how much of a powerhouse this shredder is compared to all the other ones I’ve owned previously! So it’s been easily worth the money already as it has outlasted the others that would start malfunctioning at ~1,000 sheets. It’s also never jammed on me! I’ve never tried 12 sheets on it, but it’ll do 6 sheets no problem, whereas my previous shredders would start falling apart — literally — if you tried 6 sheets. And this thing can run for like an hour without overheating! Like I get tired out and I have to take a break well before it overheats. Whereas with previous ones, I’d spend like 2 minutes and already had to wait for it to cool down. Now the bottleneck isn’t the shredder, but me!Also, because it’s been so durable so far, I’m no longer afraid of shredding things here and there, worried that the shredder might suddenly break. Sometimes I shred some old documents as a therapeutic, meditative activity now — shred your worries away xDIt also holds more paper than my previous shredders before I have to clean it out. And while it is taller than I expected, that surprisingly made it more ergonomic so I didn’t have to lean over as much while shredding. As some reviewers have noted, when I got it I did check the insides and did see some bits of shredded paper. That seemed sketchy, but it does say on the note that comes with it that they “test every shredder” and so that’s why you might see some leftover bits. And honestly, even if it is used, it’s outlasted my previous shredders by a 10x margin already, so it’s good quality stuff either way.So, overall, well worth the price, best bag for my buck I’ve had with a shredder. Bonsaii also has a 1-year warranty (and the reviews seem to say that they’ve made good on that too!), which is why I originally bought it with my past shredder purchases going awry. But I guess it’s as they say, if a company is confident in such a long warranty, the product probably isn’t going to break quickly! Hoping to have this last for many more years 🙂

  6. I like that it’s relatively quiet and shreds thoroughly. I only shred less than suggested and it chews it up. If it holds up I’ll be very pleased with the purchase.

  7. Had this for about two weeks and quite happy with this purchase. Very happy with noise level of this shredder most of all. It is sooo quiet compared to shredder this replaced, I can barely hear it over ambient noise when it’s running. The steel cutting heads were also a big selling point for me, since the shredder this replaced didn’t have that. Grinds up paper and credit cards with ease into little tiny pieces. The shred size was also a big selling point. Ran a bin full of shred without issue, including several expired credit cards. Really easy to use as well, push the power button in and feed it material.

  8. One wheel broke a small section off the base of the shredder, and I had to pull off all wheels to keep the shredder from falling over. The shredder sits on a plastic chair mat, so it’s not getting stuck on carpeting.I’ve had several shredders over the years, and this is a decent shredder for the price. It jams periodically, just as most do, when several pages get off-center and fold over.I typically use the shredder a few times a week. However, I periodically shred a box of documents. My next shredder with either not have wheels or I’ll buy a higher quality and more expensive shredder.

  9. This shredder is sturdy, rolls easily, and there is no sound when the paper is actually shredding. I shredded at least three copier paper boxes worth, two or three sheets at a time and turned the machine off when not in use. My other shredder worked only when it wanted to. This has been quite reliable.

  10. Alan at Customer Service was outstanding – timely and helpful. Had some initial hardware issues but Alan resolved them. Well done!

  11. This shredder is a work horse, I had no overheating problems for a couple hours of work. I stopped using my old Brothers 12 page now due to constant overheating issues.

  12. I’m turning 30, I’m moving, and I’m going through drawers and gym bags… and boxes and bags and oh my God how is there mail from 2019 in this container? I can’t move like this! So I go to Amazon (after Walmart) looking for something SIMPLE that will protect our identity after I shed old cards and irs statements. After hours of sorting unopened mail, and having multiple heart attacks at HOW MUCH OF MY INFORMATION IS DISCLOSED IN NORMAL ENVELOPES, I realized I wanted something NOW. I read the reviews on the fancy shredders and to be frank, I’m not that important. I don’t have a use for this every day. So cost wise, with the many pictures and videos I was mostly sold on the give it to me now option known as get it today. It’s a beast. I could take this out of the box in the dark and still set in the top (all the machinary and teeth, maybe 5-8lbs dense weight) to align to the base. It has a safety mechanism so it won’t allow you to try to use it if it’s not personally feeling secure. If I broke the waste basket (where it must connect to release the safety) I feel confident I could Jerry something up and continue using it however this thing is tough. I’m not looking to kick it around, I put it back in its box after 30 minutes of fun. It’s quiet enough my roommate still continued doing his calls working from home while I chewed away this embarrassing mess of don’t do this with your mail. I got the 12 sheet shredder, knowing I had insurance packets and old cards. My only complaint is to progressive insurance. If you are so pushy with paperless service when you are my insurer, why do I feel like this is mob mentality of a horse head in my bed as I shred entire adolescent trees coated in advertisement…. powerful. You can use it without instructions but if you want to be perfect, read the instructions. I got the 10$ warranty, seems better that another 50$ if I break the can. The shreds are fine enough I feel confident the only person who would try to put it back together is my mother and she lives in another state so that’s a major plus for my sense of security. Amazon returns are really easy, so if you’re unsure what you need I recommend starting here, and it’s less risk than most other sellers. Read the reviews. I didn’t over heat ever, and I only jammed my first attempt at the poor baby tree progressive sent me to bring me back to their policy. I recommend this 10 fold.

  14. I have had a crappy little strip shredder for years. It would do 2 pages at a time and overheated when pushed to hard. I am trying to clean up my files and this would never do what I needed. This new machine is not much bigger than my old one but can easily shred stapled bank statements. It does 4-5 pages easily. I do not think it could actually do 10 sheets at a time, but who cares? It will even do unopened envelopes with statements (2 or 3 sheets folded). So far I have only used it for one large batch of papers, but am happy with it.The maintenance section of the manual mentioned running a lubricant pack through the shredder, but none was included. Maybe this needs to be purchased separately?

  15. Love that it’s streamlined design to fit in tight area, it’s safe and easy to use and it’s not a noisemaker-in fact, a family member was on the phone w/shredder next to her and the caller confirmed she was unaware of its use-unlike the previous so called quiet shredder! Somewhat disappointed I believe it may be the design of the large capacity paper bin, it automatically shuts off and won’t allow it to fill to its full capacity, thereby, emptying it more frequently then the former shredder. Otherwise pleased w/purchase.

  16. This is one of the best shredders I’ve ever owned. Easy to use, very quiet and easily shreds a high capacity of various documents.

  17. This is my third shredder and I’ve learned what’s important. This is a 16 sheet shredder. There’s no reason to put in 16 sheets but with this shredder you don’t have to carefully count the sheets or worry about paper quality, just put them in. The controls have a FWD position so it stays on while you feed the sheets rather than shutting on and off as you feed them. It’s heavy duty and I noticed this when I took it out of the box and assembled it. The motor and cutters are heavy and built strong. I used it practically every day for the first week and put over 2000 sheets through it. Never a problem. You can shred for 40 minutes. It never overheated on me. It even has an internal small fan to keep it cool as it operates, few others have this. The basket is large and its easy to see when it needs to be emptied. So I bought it for what others don’t have and it is still at a very competitive price. 1. Heavy duty, 2. 16 sheet capacity, 3. Forty minute run time without overheating, 3. Large easy pullout basket, 4. Quick shredding speed.I put this through a lot of shredding before writing this review. It worked great with no hiccups.

  18. I decided to buy a shredder that was more heavy duty than prior ones I bought. After returning a Walmart Fellowes shredder 2xs, I thought not again. Really both were a piece of junk. This wolverine is extremely quiet, and I love how it shreds. The pieces that are shredded are very small particles in which no scammer could ever piece together. The shredder is very nice and I’m very pleased. It cost more than the cheaply made Fellowes Walmart brand but so well worth it. I believe it, with proper care, will last a long time.

  19. Easy to move around and excellent run time. Can shred plenty with the extended run time, noise level is good and frot removable bin (with view window) makes this easy to use. Simple operation.

  20. So I have purchased three of these shredders and they are great for what they are designed to do. They “can” shredder up to eight documents at a time, but I would suggest against it. I would do about two to three documents at a time to get maximum shredding affect for the documents. Also if your going to shred cards do those one at a time. At time too I would shred some non important documents just to add fluffy to the shred to confusion anyone going through your documents. Besides that they last about two to four years with usage about two to four times a week with about 10 to 20 documents per-sessions, which for the price totally worth it. If you need to do a ton of documents I would suggest a more heavy duty shredder, but if your doing basic about through the mail this should be able to handle it. When you first get it, and you had a bunch of documents ready for shredding it might need a break about after 10 to 20 minutes of continually usage this is typical due to over heating just give it about 30 minutes before continuing shredding also make sure to empty the bin, because if it’s full it could cause it to not cool as quickly as it could when it’s empty. Thank you for taking the time to read this review.

  22. This inexpensive shredder does the job! The design is simple and efficient — and the built-in handle is pure genius. It makes emptying the bin sooo easy! My arthritic hands thank you. Sure, this shredder doesn’t have a zillion bells and whistles, but it’s perfect for use at home. The cross cut result takes up less space in the bin (think confetti) than the long, annoying strips produced by some shredders, and thus is also superior for privacy. Some reviewers reported a problem with shredding receipts, but I simply turn narrow receipts printed on thin paper sideways (horizontal as opposed to vertical feed) and shred a group of 4-6 receipts at a time. No problem there! My only gripe with this shredder is the noise, and I wouldn’t want to listen to that for hours at a time . . . but this great small shredder isn’t designed to be run for hours at a time! And in all fairness, I suspect crosscutting generates more noise than long strips. All in all, a very good shredder for home use at a great price.

  23. This unit replaces another manufacturers model. If anything it shreds quite well. But I often find myself trying several times to slot the to-be-shredded paper into the top of the unit. It is almost as if the top slot is too small.

  24. The shredder is working as advertised, though I would not know if it will shred 16 pages at a time. The slot for inserting the paper is too narrow for 16 sheets of 20 pound paper. Not a big issue unless you shred LOTS of docs. My only real complaint is the catch bin. It is kind of neat the way it slides in under the shredder, but the basket design makes it difficult to empty into a large bag (like a yard debris bag). It also leads to quite a bit of debris falling into the area where the basket slides into. Solution – empty often. Which makes a product that is supposed to do bulk shredding a little less of a bulk shredder. Yea, I know this is not a tree mulcher, but for $100, I would have expected a little more thought into the WHOLE product, instead of making a good shredder and putting it on top of a so-so basket. Probably worth the money – so far. Lets see if it lasts for 16 year like the $24 Aurora AS1002X, ten sheet shredder I bought back in 2005. Have not tried shredding CDs yet, but it chews up plastic CCs easy enough.

  25. Quality and performance.

  26. I have had shredders before, but none have worked as well or felt as sturdy as this one. I had a shopping bag full of papers I needed to have shredded, so I bought this 12 sheet shredder instead of taking the papers (junk mail w/my info on it, bills, etc.), to a UPS store. No problems shredding all of it, including old credit cards. A couple of times I put too many sheets in at once, and the shredder stopped, I hit the reverse, and easily removed the stuck sheets without any harm to the machine. It did not overheat (my old one did after just a few minutes), and storing it after I was done, was easy. The basket is a bit on the small side, though adequate and much sturdier than my old shredder’s. The glass (hard plastic?) window in the basket made it easy to see when it needed to be emptied. The top that contains the shredding system and all the electricals to run it, is very heavy, thus, it was good to have a sturdy basket. The top fits well into the basket. My previous shredder always felt unstable, but this one did not.I will probably be using WD-40 oil to make sure it continues to work well. I need to learn how often that is recommended, and will fully read through the enclosed instructions to learn how often – if it’s recommended at all. Some comments mentioned it before I decided to buy this, so I’ll look into it since I never oiled other shedders. (Maybe that’s why they didn’t last? – Who knows…)For this one, though: so far, so good. Seems to be well worth the $40 price.

  28. This is a good fairly inexpensive shredder. Easy enough to empty (just lift the top and empty the bucket). I wish it had a bin that you can just remove instead of having to lift the shredder to empty the bin but I guess for the price, I shouldn’t complain. We just bought it recently so I haven’t used it that much. Hopefully it lasts. My other one conked out after years of use (bits of paper got jammed between the teeth and it just stopped shredding. My only complaint about the Bonsaii shredder is how loud it is. I don’t know if I just got used to my old “quieter” shredder or maybe there is something wrong with the motor of the unit that I got. Most comments here say it is not loud but the unit that I have is really loud — too loud.

  29. Just used this to shred a pretty large pile of old bank statements. Worked like a charm, didn’t over heat. I did only put 3 or 4 at a time, why overtax it. Easy to rid the paper shreds from the blades, just run in Forward and Reverse and it cleans it quite well.

  30. My old shredder that has been a workhorse for many years finally kicked the bucket. I purchased this and it came in a very firm protective box. Easy to set up and use right away. Can’t be happier.
