How To Buy The Best Ice Skates In 2022
If you’re shopping for ice skates for yourself or others, you might not know which type to look for, but there are three varieties they typically fall into. Depending on what type of ice sport you or your child may be getting into, they can look for skates that are either made for hockey, figure skating or speed skating.
Hockey skate blades are curved at each end and flat in the middle. Hockey boots have a high ankle and are made out of or encased in rigid materials, such as plastic. The short, rounded blades increase maneuverability, designed for lots of sudden starts and stops, as well as sharp turns. The boots limit flexibility but provide more power.
Figure skates have longer blades, which are rounded and have spikes called toe picks at the front. They are flat at the back. Figure skate boots are also high-ankled, still fairly stiff, but made of more flexible leather. The longer blade allows the wearer to build up more speed for jumps, and the toe pick allows the skater to perform jumps and control their landings.
Speed skate blades, meanwhile, are the longest of the three, flat at both the front and back. Long-distance and high-speed skates have a hinge at the toe, allowing the blade to remain on the ice for as long as possible, while short-track speed skates are fixed at the heel to give better control for wearers making frequent corners. Both versions have reinforced heels.
When buying skates for yourself or your little one, a good fit, comfort and safety are primary concerns, of course. Use any measurements provided by manufacturers to ensure the skates will fit because an ill-fitting pair can slow your technique on the ice.
The Ice Skates Tips and Advice
Most new skates will need to be sharpened before use. The edge will have a generally correct shape, but it will not have the sharpness nor the particular grind radius best for your little one’s skate style or experience.
Smaller grind radii (i.e. deeper) are better for smaller and more lightweight skaters, as it allows the skate to cut deeper into the ice and provide more fine control and acceleration. Sharper blades will have a lower top speed as it loses more energy into the ice.
Larger grind radii (i.e. flatter) will allow larger and heavier skaters to move faster and more efficiently across the ice, but it offers less explosive acceleration and stopping.

I absolutely LOVE my new skates!! I’m still breaking them in but they’re actually pretty comfortable out of the box, great ankle support, blades seem perfectly straight and I would highly recommend themEdit- they’re great skates. I was having some issues at first but then I realized the guy who sharpened them did them too sharp. These are awesome for entry level or intermediate level skaters but I don’t think there’s enough ankle support for jumps, I can do bunny hops just fine. Still happy with my purchase and would still recommend
I just received these skates and they are beautiful! I repositioned my own blade because I know as an experienced skater what I need to do and where they should be- I gave it 4 stars out of 5 for 2 things. One is that these are supposed to be brand new out of the box and there were a ton of finger prints all over my blade. Obviously someone had tried these on and perhaps returned them- but they fit me like new skates so I’ll let it slide. Also and this is IMPORTANT!!! I read a lot of the questions and reviews of people saying that these skates are smaller than street size. THIS IS FALSE! If you are a size 9 street, you are a size 9 skate in these. In fact I would even get a size higher NOT lower in these skates! The pro shop measured my foot at 8 3/4 and I had to buy a 9.5 Jackson boot skate and it fits perfect- as a skate should fit – snug and to the tippy toe box… the q and a is misleading! Follow the size you are and go up one half- and if you have wide feet, get the wide and the heat mold done. It can add another quarter of an inch width with the heat which I had done. These skates are very durable and supportive but the low ankle in the back takes some getting used to. If you are tall like me it feels a bit like you are hanging out of your skate- it takes some getting used to- but these boots are super top of the line. Ankles are very stiff and will need to be punched out for comfort but that’s what you want when you are learning jumps and spins. A really nice mid level skate and blade here and the curve on the aspire blade is excellent- lots of room before the pick hits the ice. All in all I highly recommend these and it was a great deal for the price- the pro shop wants $330 for these exact skates and they don’t carry larger sizes so feel confident ordering these – just remember- they are similar to street shoe size- NOT smaller! I just came from a pair of Gams that were slightly too big although super comfy- these fit better and are no nonsense boots… so the sizes are snug even at the same size as streetuntil you get them heat molded. If you want more room or room for growth get one half size bigger than you would! So if you’re an 8.5 street shoe, you need a 9 for roomy comfort. Trust me. Just went through nightmares at the pro shop not having my size which is why I resorted to buying these here online 🙂 good luck and happy skating!
The media could not be loaded. Excelente Producto!
Review from the wife- Would have been nice to have a size guide somewhere in the listing. I went to the manufacturers website and followed their directions for sizing. My street shoe is a 6, but according to how they size I would skate with a 5. Skates showed up, and were way to tight. If I ordered a size 6 I have a feeling all would have been fine.
Found sizing a bit confusing and ended up ordering the wrong size. I returned them, but my initial impression was that they were of good quality so no complaints.
Are my kids going to be Olympic ice skaters? No. They’re not. But they do have an interest in casual ice skating for fun a few times a week through the some of the winter. I’m not sure I want to buy new skates every year, so with these going from sizes 4-7 we should at least get us two seasons out of them. They adjust easily, my child secures them herself— easy on, easy off. Just hold the liners in place behind the ankle as you pull off. A bit of a pain to get them back in there. Not impossible, just annoying. My kid likes these particular skates, she’s managed to last 3 hours skating in 20° weather without complaining her feet were freezing…or sore! She was wearing standard bomba socks, so not even wool.If they had been available for my other kiddo’s size, I’d have bought another pair. Absolutely recommend these for casual skating fun. They’re obviously not appropriate for figure skating lessons or hockey…
I do really like these skates. They’re very comfortable and have been great to practice with. As noted in other reviews, they do just come with the factory sharpen, so the blades are really really dull upon arrival. After getting them sharpened, they were great. The only reason I didn’t give them 5 stars is because they have split a little bit on the sides on the tongue, causing the stuffing the come out a bit. This hasn’t caused a problem yet, but I’m just hoping they stay in good shape.

I bought these for my 7 year old daughter who is fairly dedicated to learning to figure skate. Her feet use to get cold in her previous pair of skates but these keep her feet nice and toasty warm. She loves them and says they are super comfortable which allows her to skate longer.

Measurements are pretty accurate from what I can tell. You CANNOT compare these figure skates to street shoes as Jacksons seem to run on the larger side. My last figure skates (SP Teri which I got over 20 years ago!) were a size 6.5, however, they were custom made to fit my feet.Figure skates should fit snugly or else will breakdown quickly and make it harder to jump and spin. I usually wear a 7-7.5 in sneakers (an almost perfect 7 in traditional Converse sneakers) and ended up having to exchange the 6.5W skates for a 6W. I’m between an W and R so I stuck with the wide option.Break in time wasn’t too bad, but I’m only doing single jumps and spins – not attempting any doubles (those days are over!). Blades aren’t the greatest, but you can’t expect much with blades that already come mounted on the skates. Overall, as a returning skater who’s just skating for “funsies”, these skates have been a decent and comfortable option without having to pay a lot of $$$.
These were perfect and comfortable!
ice skate laces are a pain in the butt. the buckles on these make the process much easier with a toddler who doesn’t want to spend a few minutes tightening laces 🙂 theyre not as rigid as a traditional hockey skate but have much more support than a figure skate. they come sharp”ish” but my little one looked better on the ice after they were sharpened (expect $5-8/pair for sharpening)
I bought these so I could practice with my daughter who is taking lessons. We skate ~3x per week, and these have held up great. I’m a beginner as well, and these have worked out very well for me. Make sure you get sized before buying. You want them to be snug on your feet, and without much wiggle room. I’m normally a size 12 shoe, but in skates I’m an 11.5.
I didn’t expect a whole lot since they where relatively cheap but dang, I’ve never had such great skates, I got a size 8 in womens and the support is unbelievable, I love them, highly recommend, they are also very cute
I love adjustable skates for kids. Really, it’s the only way to go unless you want to buy new ones every six months. These are great!
This is a good basic learn to skate boot. I used it for about 9 months until I went into private lessons and needed something a little more high end. Keep in mind the fit is somewhat narrow and this is not a heat adjustable boot. So, not appropriate for higher level skating. If you’re looking for something casual it’s a great option.
Boot fits well for my new 3 year old skater but the blades bring my review down from a 5 to a 3. Basically, you get what you pay for. Love Jackson skates overall for fit and quality and her older sisters wear higher, and much more expensive, models and have no issues. However this blade is very poor quality and have needed to be sharpened 2x in only a few weeks, despite wearing hard guards when off the ice and soft guards when skates are in her bag.
These are a great set of first skates. Kids out grow foot wear so quickly these provide more years of wear.
