The first time my daughter brought lice home from school, I consulted the pharmacist, used an over-the-counter product, and the cheap plastic nit comb that came with it. Followed the directions exactly, hated the smell and hated using a toxic product, and then spent 4 hours thoroughly combing out the nits and many live lice. The next day there were still some live bugs in her hair (in spite of hours and hours of vacuuming carpet and upholstery and washing all bedding in hot water, and bagging up all stuffed animals). Got a heavy- duty prescription from the pediatrician, which did the job, but I felt horrible using it on her. The same boy in her 4th grade class brought lice to school again a few months later to the point where they were falling out of his head onto his desk, and girls were shreiking (shave that boy’s head, mama!).This time I had Licelogic Clear and Free shampoo on hand (just in case!). I loved it! This time the nits were a lot easier to remove, the smell of the shampoo was good, and it left my daughter’s hair and scalp in really good condition – clean and silky, without being oily. It works! There is enough left in the bottle for more treatments, but my husband wants me to buy 3 bottles ahead, just to have on hand. Parents need to use a really good nit comb (available on Amazon.com), follow directions exactly, and follow all the recommendations on the Internet concerning ridding them from the household (and please check the kids’ scalps daily for 2 weeks, then weekly, so you don’t spread them to other kids). I don’t wish this nightmare on anyone.
One reason this homeopathic remedy is so effective is simple. The main “inactive” ingredient is Benzyl Alcohol, a substance approved by the FDA for use on lice. I pulled the following from the FDA website on lice:”Prescription MedicationsThe following medications, in alphabetical order, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of head lice are available only by prescription. If crawling lice are still seen after a full course of treatment, contact your health care provider.Benzyl alcohol lotion, 5%;Brand name product: Ulesfia lotion*Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol. Benzyl alcohol lotion, 5% has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of head lice and is considered safe and effective when used as directed. It kills lice but it is not ovicidal. A second treatment is needed 7 days after the first treatment to kill any newly hatched lice before they can produce new eggs. Benzyl alcohol lotion is intended for use on persons who are 6 months of age and older and its safety in persons aged more 60 years has not been established. It can be irritating to the skin.”I have a unfortunate allergy to Benzyl Alcohol so I was caught off guard by the hives I am currently suffering. I haven’t encountered this ingredient in ten years (and previously only in injectable form, when I needed progesterone injections during pregnancy ten years ago. It is my only non-medication allergy, which is why it did not occur to me to read the label). After developing hives and severe itching about 10 hours after using this product on my hands, back, scalp, and anywhere my hair touched, I of course looked to the bottle to find the cause. Upon seeing a Benzyl Alcohol as the main inactive ingredient, I immediately realized my error, but also wondered the reason for its inclusion as an ingredient as it is so unusual to find this ingredient in an OTC item (believe me, I’d realize it if I encountered it before topically!). This is why I searched to see if Benzyl Alcohol was something used on its own to kill lice, and come to find out, yes it is.I’m surprised to see it listed as an “inactive” ingredient and I suspect it is a workaround so you don’t need an RX. I do wish the inactive ingredients had been listed on amazon, as it would have been one more chance at saving me my current painful dilemma and doctor’s visit today. I do take responsibility, though, as it’s my job to read the label, active and inactive ingredients alike. I won’t make this mistake again.Bottom line, though, if you are looking for a prescription strength medication to kill lice, this fits the bill.As far as its use as a treatment goes, I can’t speak to its effectiveness as this was a follow up treatment for us–we hopefully had no live lice in our heads when we used it. This was treatment number 2 of 4 as I want to do some kind of “natural” treatment every 3-4 days for two weeks, each treatment followed by a comb out, as that is what helped us get rid of lice very definitively last time we had it. This time we caught it super early, and one treatment likely would have been enough, but lice are persistent, so I figure I should be, too. For our first treatment we used an enzymatic lice killing shampoo (happyheads), which was effective but more expensive. One final point– we are a family of extremely thick hair, hanging maybe four inches below our shoulders, and I needed to use an entire bottle on just myself, and my daughter and son combined (she has hair similar to mine but in kid form and his is very thick but short) used 2/3 of a second bottle. I’m thinking it doesn’t really save money over the enzymatic shampoo, as that lasted our family of four through all four treatments last time. One bottle of shampoo, $30 for the Happyheads® Bye-Bye Lice® Family Treatment Box Kit, would be the equivalent of six or seven bottles of this spray on. I’d recommend this spray on if you are a family with fine hair, crew cuts, etc, or looking for something a little easier than shampoo. It definitely needs to be washed out, though, especially on thick hair–it felt pretty awful once it started to dry.Good luck getting rid of your lice, and I hope this added info helps!
For almost 9 months, I’ve been trying my hardest to maintain my daughters hair clean by using various brands and I was at a point to just cut her hair really short. My daughter has long hair with dandruff so when I would use certain solutions, she would break out with more dry scalp and made her itch even more. It was a feeding frenzy for the lice. I tried everything from prescribed to home remedies, and I never got good results. I am a believer in this product and I’ll continue to use until the lice are all gone! The shampoo and conditioner has saved me from the struggle of cleaning my daughters hair day in and day out. It’s been two months now and she is lice free. FYI… the treatment worke well with her scalp.
We used this treatment on 4 family members during a particularly bad lice year in my daughter’s class. The treatment did “work” to get rid of the lice, with diligent combing with the Terminator comb, the nits and lice were all removed, presumed dead when they lay motionless on a paper towel. The treatment is very time consuming and thus irritating to young children though. On the second order of shampoo and conditioner, we started to wonder if we were really getting rid of the lice, or if we were the culprits who kept reinfesting the class. So we bagged up the “dead” lice and nymphs and waited. About 30 minutes after they were bagged, the lice slightly reanimated. In an hour they were crawling around in the bag, very much alive and well and searching for fresh scalps to infest!!I emailed the company, since they claim to eliminate lice by breaking down their exoskeletons, and their response was that I wasn’t using enough shampoo. Fair enough. I used nearly 1/2 bottle on the next child’s treatment, bagged the lice again, and had the same results. Live lice that only died after 24 hours in the bag (because that’s how long they can live without food). I emailed again with my findings and got no response. So, does this treatment help get rid of lice? Yes. Did it likely take care of my family’s lice problem? Yes. Is it worth the $21/bottle (plus $21/bottle of conditioner) and hours of extra time treating? I don’t think so.I’ve recently found that saturating hair in plain conditioner and combing through daily with the Terminator for at least a week is the best way to get rid of lice. Most of them come out in the first treatment, and after that dry combing seems to get out the rest.********************UPDATE*************************After writing this, during which time our family was on vacation when my daughter was found to have lice again, we returned home and I decided to test my theory. I had been combing through nightly and thought I had them all. I decided to use just the ClearLice conditioner on my daughter’s head, and lo and behold, 3 (!) more lice and a few nits. Boo. I combed and combed until I wasn’t getting anything more. I still wasn’t satisfied so used the ClearLice shampoo followed by the conditioner again and got out more nits and a few tiny nit sized nymphs. So I have to bump up the star rating on this and say that it really is worth it. Even though it doesn’t kill the lice, it does stun them long enough to prevent them from scurrying away when you try to comb them out. Just dispose of them in a sealed bag!
I got this to prevent my kids from getting lice at school. So far, so good. It has a nice smell and is not harsh on our hair.
In September my daughter came home with the dreaded vampire in her scalp. I only saw it because of the way the light hit her scalp and thus began our never ending journey. You name it I have tried it. Lice Clinics of America, Conditioner, Lice Free Spray, Neem Oil, Nix, Rid, Olive Oil, Green Tea Oil, etc. Yes I washed her bedding in hot hot water, used a hot dryer. I was losing my mind. I checked her hair every day and combed daily. We got to 21 days and we began all over again. The current school district does not send kids home because it is not an emergency, but let me tell you its annoying, disgusting, and gross. The worst part of all this was it entered my hair and I have very very thick hair – my Dad used to use it lead ropes for horses. Regardless, this product has worked on her hair and I have yet to see anything in her hair and in my hair. I seriously contemplated shaving our heads – Thank Goodness it did not come to that. I sincerely appreciate this product and it does not cause any allergic reactions. It also really worked on my thick, thick hair. Thank you so much!!!!
I can’t tell you how many times my girls have got lice, especially the one with the long thick hair. She has friends that keep getting it repeatedly. It’s gone around their school several times. She gets it, then one of us gets it (even me). It’s SO frustrating having to treat everyone, wash everything in hot water and go through the tedious process of picking out all the nits. This past time took me 5 hours for one child (she has really thick long hair). We had to take a lot of breaks because she hates doing this (hello? so do I!) Here’s a tip I figured out the first time we went through this on Christmas break in 1st grade: I gave them a candy cane to suck on while I combed the nits out. It really helped keep them still.Pretty early on one of the friend’s parents found this stuff. I’d been using a prescription that worked but had bad stuff in it. He’d tried OTC stuff that did nothing. He buys ClearLice by the gallon. We both love that it doesn’t have any kind of chemicals, etc. that are bad for you to breathe or have neurological effects over time. It smells really good too. I really like how easy it is to completely saturate your hair and how well it lathers. With long thick hair it’s hard to get to all the roots which is so important. It’s amazing how such a little bit goes such a long way.If you follow the directions it will definitely work. To me the most important steps are: covering all the roots and leaving on with a plastic cap 40 minutes (we’ve done longer), washing/drying all linens, etc. in hot, soaking all brushes, combs etc. in a bleach solution, and retreating 7 days later. To be honest, I hadn’t realized til I reread the directions that you’re supposed to use the shampoo a 2nd time for 20 minutes, rinse, then apply conditioner, leave in and pick the nits out with the conditioner still in.Just doing what I’ve been doing has worked for us. Last time I found a live louse when I was picking out the nits. That has happened before. Once there were 2. That’s why even though this product does something to render the nits ineffective, I still pick them out. And why you HAVE to retreat and recheck. Normally she hasn’t been itching so I don’t do as thorough a recheck. I concentrate on the areas I found the most nits the 1st time.I mentioned that I’ve got them from the kids. Since I can’t check my own hair for nits and don’t have anyone reliable to do it, I’m out of luck. So, at the very 1st sign of itching I treat my hair. I’m so paranoid about getting them I’ve probably treated my hair when I didn’t need to. But it’s rare and shouldn’t be a problem.I’ve read the horror stories from parents who fought this for months on end. This product works the 1st application. Follow the directions, retreat in a week and you’re done. Good luck!
My daughter started scratching her head on Sunday. On Monday morning, we found the lice. I had no idea what to do, this was our first ever encounter with lice. Our pediatrician called in a prescription for a lice treatment, but it wasn’t in stock. While I was at the pharmacy, I found this (Nix Ultra). Bought 3 bottles (crazy expensive at there compared to Amazon). I didn’t even check my other two daughters, but wasn’t taking any chances. Treated our entire family that morning. The solution is easy to use. I saturated everyone’s heads, rubbed it in really well so that every, single hair and entire scalp was completely covered. Everyone sat with the stuff on their heads for way longer than the directed 10 minutes while I did everyone. Rinsed it off and dead stuff was falling out of Patient Zero’s hair while we rinsed. Washed everyone’s hair with dish soap (great tip from other reviewers). Used the included combs to section off and comb out everyone’s hair. Didn’t really see anything else in anyone’s hair at that point. Pulled everyone’s bedding, clothing, pajamas, coats, and all towels, etc and started a massive, never-ending laundry party. That took ALL DAY and the laundry wasn’t even close to being done. Grabbed clean sleeping bags and extra pillows and had everyone find a spot on the floor to sleep- FAR AWAY FROM ONE ANOTHER- in a not-often used area of the house- I wasn’t taking any chances of any live lice crawling from their beds back into their hair. Next day, did quick morning head checks (didn’t see anything) and continued laundry. Researched (and could’ve earned a doctorate by the time I was done) lice removal. Ordered terminator lice combs and a large lighted magnifying glass (the magnifying glass is an important tool that not many people mentioned). That night, I went through everyone’s hair, practically strand by strand. One daughter had one live louse and several eggs in one spot. I retreated her head with the Nix ultra immediately. Nothing else crawling in anyone else’s heads, but some nits and dead things. Everyone had greasy hair, but that took care of the lice. Washed everyone’s bedding again. Moved to another location for sleeping again that night. (Not risking any live lice transferring back to heads). The third day, I combed through everyone’s hair again, practically strand by strand, and used the magnifying glass (seriously, get a large, lighted magnifying glass). It took HOURS to do everyone’s hair, but totally worth the time. Found a few really small nit eggs that would never have been found if not for the magnifying glass. Hopefully, they were all dead. Nothing crawling. Fourth day, everyone appears to be lice free. I can’t imagine that I missed anything, but will continue to check every night and do the retreatment in a few days, just in case. I hope that was our first and only-ever encounter with lice. The stuff works, but definitely comb out thoroughly every night, in case anything was missed.
Very good product
A few years ago my son got lice at school. After that we started using this just as a deterrent. The scent in really nice! He’s been using it ever since and it’s great.
Before i started want to use it, the lice suddenly gone.
NOTE: Do not order from Amazon – this product is notorious to get “lost in shipping,” probably because it works SO WELL. So research your local stores for it.
easy to use is not toxic good product
Does not cure the lice infestation. Not great for softness either.
I am not sure if it worked, because I only used a bottle and I have a feeling it did give my head lice a little different. But I recommend using this bottle more then only once, it will most likely work better.
Didn’t work and left hair super dry and damaged.
the comb makes it easy to remove the lice. very easy to scrape them onto a plate for snacking
THE NIT FREE SHAMPOO WORKS FOR US IN A JAIL SETTING. NO HEAVY OR BAD ODOR.
If we should apply the mousse before the lice shampoo treatment, WHY is that not indicated anywhere when ordering the shampoo/conditioner?? I wait a week and a half for it to arrive, read the teeny tiny directions on the bottle, and THEN find out that I was supposed to pretreat with the matching mousse. UNIMPRESSED. I used the “messenger assistant” on your product page to chat with you about this, but guess what? After going through the list of what I want to chat about, it tells me to message and send below, and then THERE’S NO PLACE TO TYPE MY MESSAGE!! So I’m telling the whole world in this review.I’m going to use the shampoo on my kids anyway because they need something to help. In the meantime, I’ll order the mousse, grumpily. I’m very, very hopeful that this product will WORK, unlike the heavy-duty stuff sold in stores. (Actually I’m really quite a pleasant person! But who’s pleasant when they’re dealing with LICE? Ha ha, thank you and bless you all)
I wanted more from this product. The strength of this product was lacking.

Product is fine I guess… too early to tell but i’m annoyed because the lice shampoo didn’t come with a label on the bottle to show directions.

one of my grand kids got head lice. i think this kept it from spreading to all of us once we knew she had them. there are 6 of us and 3 we’re spared getting them product was easy to use
It smells like lemons grass and fresh cut hay so it’s soft smelling once the hair is rinsed it really goes along way I add some to my normal conditioner and it works amazingly. We are a household of long hair girls so we’ve some issue with head lice and this along with tea tree works amazing as a preventative.
I like to recommend this
THE BEST STUFF TO TREAT LICE FOR THE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD ! LATHERS GOOD AND WIPES OUT LICE
muy eficiente con solo una aplicación desaparecieron los piojos
I swear that every year my kids get around other kids they catch lice- then bring it home and share it with the family. It is a horrible, expensive nuisance and I have tried so many different products. I honestly didn’t have a lot of faith in this product, but I basically started down the list and have been going through and picking things randomly to try. This is a spray- it is amazing. I can spray it on my boys’ hair and then use their lice comb to pull out all the nits. This lice comb is the key, I think… The success of nit removal was unreal- it made it so much easier than Nix or an of those other products that have the solution to help remove the nits. I saturated my boys’ hair and sent them to play for a while. I sprayed them a little more and combed throught their hair. I swear- they were lice free the following day when I checked- other treatments usually take multiple uses- this irradicated the issue on the first try. I also love the smell-it isn’t a chemicle smell, but more of a anise and clove type scent- I personally am glad they didn’t use lavendar and vanilla- the spicey scent is refreshing, but not overpowering.
This was a great brand to find. It smells good and seems to do a great job quickly. It doesn’t have all the yucky and scaring chemicals that some other lice shampoos have. We have been using it as a prevention as well after we were able to delouse.
My daughter came downstairs tonight and told me she found a louse in her hair. Just in case I had bought this product four years ago when a couple of kids at her school had lice. I used it tonight and I think it killed every single lice. They were just falling off her head and I picked out some that were stuck on her hair. They were all dead. I didn’t see any left as I blow dried her hair and looked through. I’m not sure how we didn’t know she had them so I will be checking regularly. I will retreat tomorrow and pull any eggs left out. Also my daughter’s hair seems to soak up everything so I had to use two full bottles on medium length hair. I’m so grateful I had this on hand and it still worked after years.
Lice is no joke-get this stuff in your kids hair the minute you get communication lice is at their school.
Theres been 4 warnings sent home since school started in August. We use the shampoo twice a week and the spray conditioner on school days. Smells great and has done a great job preventing lice so far!!
Llevamos un par de meses lavándonos el pelo con este shampoo, por ahora no hemos tenido piojos, pero no se si se debe al shampoo o no. El aroma es bien pasos o a hierbas, no es malo para nada, pero… es bien aromático.
Love that it came in large bottle for the price I paid. But the spray nozzle included with the kit immediately got stuck and would literally just drip all over my hands when attempting to spray. I just used another bottle that I already had on hand. Other than that, hopefully the formula does work as expected. I used it for my bed and couch.Update 12/7/22: Customer service reached out to me and offered me a refund or product replacement. I appreciate that someone followed up. I upped my review by another star as the nozzle was imperfect but the product appeared to work as needed (no more lice) and for excellent customer service!
I have 3 daughters who tend to have long hair, but we still had managed to escape lice -with one minor incident several years back, which was taken care of super easily – until a recent camp retreat (not certain, but most likely place she got it). I tried the Nix 3 step that I got from CVS. Found nits, but never ever saw a bug. Treated. Found more nits the next day, no bugs. Treated a few days later “just to be sure”. Thought we were good. Waited a few days, still found nits, no bugs. I assumed “hey. She has a lot of hair, I can’t find them all… right?”.In the meantime, I ordered this shampoo and when it arrived, we decided to treat one more time. She said she was itchy, but from what I’ve read. You can still be itchy for a week or 2 after they’re gone.This. Worked. Perfectly! I put the shampoo/gel on her dry hair like instructed and totally saturated it. I actually combed out at least 3 adult lice and a bunch of baby newly hatched lice (remember in all other treatments, I never found an actual bug). I was fascinated… a little appalled that these bugs were crawling on her head, but totally amazed that I was finding all this when I hadn’t had any success with earlier products. Maybe it’s the comb, which seems a bit tighter in the teeth than others, maybe the solution… but either way, this product works! This will be the only product I use if godforbid we have to deal with this again!
My old favorite shampoo and conditioner that I had been using for about 7 years got discontinued and this is the first one that I’ve found that’s almost comparable. My hair and scalp feel good the only thing that might not be as great is lack of softness and shine. Would recommend this product though.
This stuff is awesome. My step daughter hasn’t had lice since using it. It doesn’t have a heavy smell when your hair is done drying. It conditions ur hair and does not cause drying of ends or any kind of irritation to sensitive scalps. Love this stuff!!
This has been one of the most effective treatments we have tried! I did not like the applicator, so I just applied it with my hands. Make sure you wash your hair really well when you are done.
Like others said, it smells like black licorice. As any parent the last thing they want to hear is “mom my head itches”. Sure enough I look and I see little tinier than poppy seeds stuck to the hair follicle just a bit further from the scalp and then I see it, the crawling little lice bug. I freak out because it’s 11 pm and I have nothing but a comb and some shampoo and now a sleeping child with bugs in her hair. Out of desperation I order this product because honestly it’s the only thing that will arrive before 8 am.I’m seriously glad I did, the first thing I did was use a blow dryer on hot setting and blow dry my kids hair. Then I start spraying and using a lice comb to scrape out the bugs and eggs. Literally bugs are falling off her head to get away from the spray. I saturate her hair in this spray while combing and put it up in a bun.End of the day comes and I start round 2. I take out the bun and start inspecting and to my surprise not a single live lice. Just a couple eggs but that’s it! I’m waiting 3 days to do it again just to make sure but I’m amazed how well this worked!
