How To Buy The Best Nasal Strips In 2022

If you’ve ever tried to sleep with congested sinuses, you know how difficult it can be. Breathing comfortably is an essential part of a solid night’s sleep, and clogged sinuses get in the way of that. Medication can help, but the side effects may mean they aren’t worth it. If you suffer from ongoing sinus issues, medications designed for short-term use won’t be an option anyway.
Nasal strips serve as a great alternative to medications. Whether you’re suffering from a nasty cold or ongoing allergy problems, you can just slip one on before bedtime and start breathing clearly in a matter of minutes. In addition to congestion, nasal strips are also popular with those who suffer from snoring and deviated septums. Although you should see a physician if you have ongoing issues, there’s no danger in using nasal strips on a daily basis.
Nasal strips attach to the area just above the flare of each nostril, sticking thanks to an adhesive on the underside. Inside the strip are flexible spring-like bands that conform to the nose’s shape as you attach. Once you let go after pressing the strip into place, the bands immediately begin to try to return to their original position, which has them straightening. As a result, they begin to lift each side of your nose, which also opens the nasal passages. The design of the strip allows this position to hold for many hours.
As you can probably imagine, though, with such an intricate design, it’s essential that the strip is designed properly. There’s no shortage of nasal strips out there, including one of the best-known brands, Breathe Right. If you opt for a lesser-known brand to save money, it’s important to make sure you’re getting the quality it takes to effectively open your sinuses and hold that position for eight hours or more.

The Nasal Strips Tips and Advice

With nasal strips, it’s important to slow down and follow the directions before you apply. Wash your face and completely dry your nose, then make sure you apply the strip exactly as the box instructs. It needs to go into the spot just above the flare of your nostrils. If you apply it in the wrong place, you won’t get the nasal lift you need. Applying on oily or dirty skin will prevent the adhesive from holding for the hours it needs to stay in place.
Another issue with nasal strips is that removal can be painful. Although this can vary from one strip to another, washing your face with warm, soapy water before removing can also help take some of the sting out. You can then gently begin to pry the strip from each of the two ends, moving inward until you’ve removed it completely.
If you have sensitive skin, you may find that nasal strips cause issues that stay with you long after you’ve removed them. Look for strips designed specifically for sensitive skin. If you have latex allergies, shop for latex-free nasal strips.
Even if your chosen nasal strips usually don’t cause a reaction, you should avoid using them if you have sores, abrasions, a sunburn or otherwise irritated skin on the area where you’re using them.
Those who need daily relief from issues like snoring or a deviated septum may find buying strips in bulk can save money. You can buy nasal strips by the hundreds. However, it may be best to try out a strip in the smallest size available to make sure it works for you before committing to a bulk order.
You’ll often find that nasal strips are sold with “one size fits all” branding. But not all noses are the same size. Some of these strips are smaller than competing brands, meaning those with larger noses may find they aren’t as effective. Whether you go with nasal strips that come in multiple size options or you choose “one size fits all,” measure your nose and ensure the strip will stretch comfortably across both nasal passages before buying.
The traditional design of nasal strips featured a tan or flesh color, geared toward blending with your nose to make it less conspicuous. However, some newer nasal strips expand those options to let you customize your look. You’ll also find that many strips for sensitive skin are clear in color, keeping harmful dyes at a minimum without drawing attention to the fact that you’re wearing them.
Some nasal strips come in lavender scent. Lavender is a favorite scent for relaxing and drifting off to sleep, so it could be a pleasant addition to your bedtime ritual.
As handy as nasal strips can be, the reason you’re using them may need medical attention. If you experience ongoing breathing issues, you may have a problem that can be remedied through surgery. Those who snore heavily each night similarly should seek medical advice to make sure they don’t suffer from a serious health issue like sleep apnea.

  1. I was very skeptical about these seeing as how cheap they are compared to Breathe Right. These are Chinese clones of Breathe Right strips right down to the packaging, instructions and the way the strips look. Even the name is strikingly similar: Breathe Better. It’s like they aren’t even trying to pretend they are their own brand. If you hold a Breathe Better next to a Breathe Right strip, it is pretty challenging to tell the difference. As with all Chinese knockoffs, the instructions have some grammatical errors, so that may help you tell the difference ;)But I really experimented a lot with these and here are my conclusions when compared to the brand name Breathe Right strips:1. The spring action on these is slightly less than the BR strips – my estimate is about 15-20% less. So while they do work, they open my nasal passages ever-so-slightly less than the BR strips.2. The adhesive is strong just like with BR except that it leaves a very subtle and tolerable sticky residue on your nose. Unlike the BR strips, this adhesive does leave a sticky feeling on your nose, but I’ve tried other generic strips and this is really very minimal. Also some have complained that the strips come off their noses. I found that if I just wiped my nose firmly with my T-shirt before putting on the strips, the adhesion was excellent. My guess is that others that had problems simply didn’t wipe the sweat off their nose. It’s as simple as that.3. These are made in China – and yes, I verified that with the seller. Should you be concerned? I don’t know. I tend to be concerned with just about anything coming out of China, Mexico, etc. These are places that put 100% of their effort in what looks and feels good to the consumer and 0% effort in safety. So who really knows what is in that adhesive that contacts your skin about 8 hours every night? Probably nothing, but there is a trust issue there and I can’t get over my suspicions.Overall, if you are hesitant about buying these as a BR replacement, I can assure you these are quite reasonable replacements and you are unlikely to be disappointed…especially considering they cost about half the BR strip cost. But if you are a bit concerned by Chinese products glued to your skin for 1/3 of your life (like me), and you want that extra oomph of nasal passage opening power without the slight sticky residue, then you might consider waiting for a good sale on BR strips and then stock up.

  2. I’ve tried Breath Right strips as well as the Silent Mammoth, the Rhinomed Mute and Rhinomed Turbine products and this review will be comparing the pros and cons of these. – Airflow -The Silent Mammoth seems to have a similar effect to the Breath Right Strips in that it expands the upper nostril area whereas the Rhinomed products expand the lower nostril area (the nose entry point). For me, the upper nostril expansion is more beneficial than the lower. This may be different for others. So Silent Mammoth and Breath Right Strips are a tie for first in this category.- Comfort -The Breath Right Strips are the most comfortable of all options. I can sleep with them, eat with them, have a conversation, do any sort of mouth movements and barely notice it’s there. It’s no surprise why they’re so popular. The Rhinomed Mute comes in second – I notice it’s there but I don’t feel any discomfort. The Rhinomed Turbine material is a little more firm (it’s for athletes and active people) which means it stays in the nose more strongly but for me I feel agitated after wearing it for a few hours. The Silent Mammoth feels great as long as I’m not doing anything active with my mouth like eating or smiling/laughing. So for stuff like sleeping it’s fine. Once I need move my mouth around then it starts to agitate my nose. So in order of Comfort from best to worst – Breath Right Strips, Rhinomed Mute, Rhinomed Turbine, Silent Mammoth.- Appearance -This is a little subjective. If you’re fine looking like you have a nose piercing, which I am, the Silent Mammoth has the most low profile look. From 10 feet away you probably won’t notice it. The Rhinomed Mute comes in second because it’s a little thicker material. Next is the Rhinomed Turbine because it’s bright yellow. Then worst of all are breath right strips for obvious reasons. I would not feel comfortable going to work with a breath right strip on my face. The other products are much better looking in my opinion.- Ease of Use -Breath right strips are the easiest to install. There’s very little room for error. The Rhinomed products come in second – after ordering the multi pack, you first have to find which size fits your nose then adjust the nostril rings of that version. Coming in last, The Silent Mammoth has taken me a few days of experimenting to figure out a good setup. It’s great because there are infinite variations on how you can bend the shape but that also means it will take some time to find the right fit.- Cleaning / Reuse -This is the main reason I wanted to try alternative to the breath right strips. I got really tired of throwing them away every day and cleaning the glue off of my nose. What a mess. So breath right strips are clearly last in this category. Although Rhinomed advertises that they need to be replaced every so often I think they’re just trying to sell more products. Warm water and soap after each use should be fine. Cleaning is the same for the Silent Mammoth. I will put Silent Mammoth in first place here because they’re easy to clean like the Rhinomed but also come with great storage cases and are intended for reuse.- Cost -This depends on how you look at it. If you’re just looking at one time costs, the Breath Right Strips are cheapest, followed by Rhinomed, then Silent Mammoth being most expensive. If you’re looking at cost per use – the Silent Mammoth and Rhinomed will earn their keep if you keep cleaning them. The Rhinomed also comes with 3 per purchase so if you’re looking at long term cost per use – I’d put Rhinomed first, then Silent Mammoth, then Breath Right Strips.- Conclusion -These all serve slightly different functions so I’d encourage you to try them out to see what works for you. For me, the reusability and airflow from the Silent Mammoth makes it my current favorite. I just with I could use it during more active times like eating, smiling, laughing. I’ll probably keep all three in my toolkit and use each depending on the situation.

  3. These are the same (or as similar as anything I’ve seen…) as the ones that Dollar Tree used to carry (forget the brand they called it…). They were the best, but then replaced them with these HUGE ones! These are slightly more $ (DT were 6/$1) but still WAY cheaper than Breathe Right and work just as well. Buying like 10 more boxes just to be safe. 🙂

  4. The one and only problem I have with these is that they are not very ridged, the spine isn’t very stiff. Better brands use the stiffer spine to apply upward force on the nostrils to help keep the more open. While these do a decent job, they do fall short of some of the other major brand. Still, though, using these is far better than not using them if you need them.

  5. I’ve used Clear Passage Nasal Strips for several years. They work as well as Breathe Rights and are less expensive.

  6. Great product really opened me up. Slept really well. Didn’t even snore that night. However, it did give me a rash from the adhesive around my nose. That’s why I give them four stares instead of five.

  7. I snore. I do not have sleep apnea. Too much partying in the 80’s left me with nasal issues that now cause me to snore. I have tried everything, and these work 99% of the time. You have to find your “sweet spot” and always press for 30 seconds straight, 1 finger on each nostril. Sometimes I miss my “sweet spot” or don’t press long enough and I still “slightly” snore, which is 1% of the time so far. I feel better in the morning now, and don’t need a nap anymore mid day. I also have very sensitive skin and had no problems with the adhesive. Just get it wet in the morning and they slide off! Great product!

  8. I didn’t even realize why I couldn’t breath at night. These work so well!!

  9. I was worried about the adhesive due to the reviews but when I used them they stayed and did the work. Even if you don’t get it right the first time and have to remove it and play it again ,it will stay put. It helped me to breathe better and to reduce the level of my snoring (it didn’t make it go away)You will have to remove it in the shower with the hot water, I did not have the reaction in my nose other people did.

  10. Ok, this is a funny product if you don’t need it for a serious reason, like keeping a breathing tube in place or something like that, so no offense is meant by my review. I was interested in trying this because lately I’ve been waking up with the most horrendous dry mouth and my snoring has amplified to a level that startles ME awake nearly every night. I have no idea how I stumbled upon mouth tape as a possible solution, but one-click later and I had the mouth tape in hand. First things first: your mouth area needs to be completely dry and free of any lotions/oils/lip balm. Even if you applied it a couple hours earlier, it will negatively affect the adhesion, so keep it dry. Secondly: once the tape is on, it’s ON. Don’t try to adjust it or you will lose the adhesion. Make sure your lips are comfortably relaxed and not pressed too tightly, because remember, this is how you are sleeping, so I would recommend opening your mouth super wide (like you’re yawning) and then naturally close your mouth and apply the tape. This will give you a closed mouth without it being a tight-lip-sealed-mouth. Third: you are done talking, eating, drinking for the night. This may be your ultimate goal! If you are looking for a way to literally keep your mouth shut so you aren’t sneaking a midnight snack while you watch “just one more episode,” this is the tape for you. My mouth stayed closed all night and I woke with a demonstrably non-dry mouth/throat. It’s not very uncomfortable and honestly once I fell asleep it didn’t bother me at all. Peeling it off in the morning is a bit of a lip exfoliation, but not terribly so and anyway, that’s supposed to be good for you, so no complaints. No sticky residue left behind. NOW: why only 3 stars? It did not positively affect my snoring at all. Roof was still shaking, husband was still pissed, I was still being scared awake because I thought a car was crashing into the house. Very very sad that the mouth tape didn’t help at all for the snoring, but it did help with the dry mouth, so there’s that. You get about a million in this one box, so I’ll probably keep using it just for that reason. WARNING: do not walk over to someone who is telling you a crazy boring meandering story and apply the tape over his mouth. You will think this is very funny and a solid solution; the person with his mouth suddenly taped shut might not.
