How To Buy The Best Top Load Washer In 2022

Let’s face it: Nobody likes to do laundry. And that’s why buying a washer may be the most important purchase you make. It will be one of the appliances that gets the most use in your house, apart from maybe your dishwasher.

If you’re in the market for a top load washer, congratulations! You’re saving money already. In general, between the two types of washers — top loading or front loading — top loaders tend to be less expensive. On average, they can also handle more material per load, and they tend to run through their wash cycle at greater speeds.

As the name implies, laundry is loaded into the machine’s cleaning drum through the top, with controls and display monitors on a panel toward the back. Historically, they’ve used a plastic spire called an agitator that sits in the middle of the drum, turning during the wash cycle with fins on it to help catch and tumble the clothes. While some models still have this feature, the majority of top loaders have done away with the agitator. Newer washers use an impeller, which is a low-profile hub at the bottom of the drum that agitates the clothes by shooting a cross-current up into the laundry. This has the obvious benefit of creating space for more clothes, and it generally handles fabrics more gently.

No matter what method they use to stir things up, most top load washers are going to use more water than their front-loading counterparts. The good news is, the wash cycle won’t take as long. And even the water usage is a broad rule of thumb. Thanks to new technologies, top loading washers can be plenty efficient. High Efficiency (HE) washers have settings that can reduce the volume of water in certain cycles. To compensate, machines that operate on a HE setting will need a corresponding HE laundry detergent that keeps the suds to a minimum. (It’s available in most stores and offered by most major brands. Just look for the “HE” designation on the label.)

HE washers can also give your clothes a longer life.

“These washers have no agitator, so there’s less wear and tear on your clothing than a standard washer,” notes Vicki Liston, our home improvement expert. “The cycles are much longer but users feel their clothes and bedding are cleaner after the wait.”

Another thing to look for if you’re concerned about your bill is Energy Star certification. This EPA-backed rating establishes resource-saving standards for a variety of appliances. In the specific case of machines like the LG Efficiency Top Loading Washer, it means that a unit with this certification uses roughly 25% less electricity and 33% less water than comparable, non-certified washers. Not only does this save the environment, but it will also save you money on utility bills.

Cash-saving perks aside, the type of laundry you do will likely determine the kind of washer you need. Plan on doing a lot of sheets? You’ll want to start by considering a washer with high-load capacity. Among top load washers, the drum capacity can vary greatly, anywhere from 2-3 cubic feet up to 8 or more. And while size matters, it’s hardly the only consideration. Your washer might have room for that fitted silk sheet, but it doesn’t mean it can wash it gently enough.

It’s worth a look at the washer settings to determine what kind of fabrics the machine will be able to handle. While we miss those college days when we could set every load on “cotton/sturdy” and turn it on, family life means a lot of different fabrics and different washing methods. If a washer has the capability to handle your specific kind of laundry, it will likely have a setting to match.

While older top loaders still might require you to drop in laundry detergent directly, the majority of modern units have a dispenser. This little plastic receptacle is good for more than saving you the trouble of measurement. Automatic dispensers can time out the dispersal of detergent at different stages in the wash cycle, and many models also have separate bins for fabric softener or bleach. If your washer has a pre-soak setting, that’s a great option for especially dirty loads. It means the unit can agitate and dole out a bit of extra detergent in low water prior to the main cycle for a focused burst of cleaning.

The Top Load Washer Tips and Advice

Avoid a move-in headache by considering the size of your washer first and foremost. And we’re not talking about the size of the interior drum. Top load washers can be smaller on length and width than front-loading models in general, but some can still take up more space than a small apartment’s laundry room will allow. Make sure to measure out the room, taking into account at least six inches of space behind the washer for power and hose hookups. For small laundry rooms (or spaces with no laundry room at all), consider a washer–dryer combo.
Now, about that load size. You’ll want to check the capacity before you buy and compare it to your average load of laundry. Most washers measure that capacity in cubic feet, and it can vary greatly. Need perspective? Bear in mind that a king-size comforter will take up roughly 4.5 cubic feet, and a single cubic foot can hold 2-3 bath towels. Needless to say, never overload your washer. Clothes packed too tightly can harm both your washer and the clothes, especially in models that use an agitator.
Speaking of capacity, don’t go overboard and pay for a larger washer drum if you don’t need it. “Think about what you’ll be washing before you opt for ‘bigger is better,’” says Vicki Liston, host of “On The Fly…DIY,” an award-winning home improvement show. “Realistically evaluating your personal needs will save you money, water and a lot of energy in the long run.”
Budget washers can be fine for those who don’t plan on doing laundry too often, but consider an HE or Energy Star-certified model for extensive use. HE washers will have at least one setting that utilizes less water in the wash cycle. Energy Star certification means the washer will use significantly less water and power, saving you money on two utility bills. Note that HE washers will need special HE detergent to get the most out of each wash.
Living in an apartment with thin walls, or a house with a light sleeper? Noisy washers can be a huge headache. Check the reviews to see how they fare. There’s no telltale sign for how noisy a washer is going to be, but in general, agitator-equipped older models will create slightly more of a racket, especially when dealing with larger loads. HE models are greener, and usually have the added benefit of quieter operation.
Sturdy construction can make or break a purchase. This is an appliance you intend to keep for a while, after all. The casing and primary parts for most washers are going to be steel, but plastic isn’t necessarily a deal breaker if you’re buying a smaller washer. Regardless of size, the most crucial part of the washer is the drum. Look for stainless steel or some comparable alloy. It should go without saying that you want a material that won’t rust, and stainless steel has the added benefit of being able to weather the inevitable impact of loose change, keys or toys.
Washing a lot of delicates? You’ll want a washer that has the agitation and temperature settings that can handle it, and you may want to lean toward a model that mixes loads with an impeller as opposed to an agitator. If you really care about your material, don’t sleep on special settings such as pre-soak, which can handle tough stains with an extra jolt of detergent. A steaming option can be another nice feature, especially in units with an agitator or smaller drum. It’s no substitute for real dry cleaning, but can help smooth out the wrinkles in problematic fabrics.
Check to see what kind of dispenser your washer has. A dose of fabric softener can help your clothes keep their smoothness, and a bleach compartment can be useful when you need to focus on tough stains. Mind you, you can still use softener or bleach even if the dispenser doesn’t contain a space for it, but you’ll need to add them manually at the correct time in the cycle. With bleach, this can be especially crucial. Wait at least five minutes after the washer has started before dropping in a half-cup. Otherwise, it can cancel out stain-fighting enzymes in the detergent.

  1. Good product and shipping was hassle free

  2. The media could not be loaded.  We did a lot of research ahead of time and settled on this washing machine because of the quietness, features, and excellent ratings. However, it had problems almost from the beginning, leaking blue fluid from the top of the drum and then screaming like a banshee during the rinse cycle. Within three months we were already having to submit a warranty claim to LG. Sadly, instead of standing by their product and putting the customer first by replacing the obviously flawed unit, they chose to send us through an arduous repair process. The repair service, A&E Factory Service, was selected by LG. After the first repair attempt, the machine was left more broken than when we started and now leaked water in the floor. This started a month long ordeal where neither A&E nor LG would do anything for us. A&E wanted to wait on another part to come in (which was unrelated to what they’d broken) and LG kept telling us to talk to A&E. All the while it was leaking water due to the botched repair job. We sat through hours of on hold time on the phone and had multiple representatives from both companies make us promises that they didn’t follow through on. Eventually we made it through to a level of LG support that was actually helpful and they submitted a request for alternative resolution (to issue a refund). A week later we were notified that the internal team had reviewed it and was guaranteeing to issue a refund to us. It’s now been three weeks and there is no check in sight. We are back to waiting on hold and having LG not respond to us. Buying an LG washer has resulted in three months of headache, having to use laundromats during a pandemic, and over $700 wasted.LG doesn’t care to make a quality product. LG certainly doesn’t care about their customers. I doubt I’ll ever buy a product of any type from them again.

  3. Doesn’t connect to wifi

  4. This machine is AWESOME!! I can’t tell you enough about having the ability to fill the tub the whole way full of water. It could be my imagination, but I don’t think so, that the clothes are much cleaner. This machine has a huge tub and full agitator. There are multiple menu selections available to mix and match the cycle to your custom need. From watching the agitator move the clothes through the wash cycle, I have no doubt the clothes are much cleaner, like deep cleaned. I bought it online from Amazon, it was shipped to my home and even delivered a day ahead of time! My daughter and myself got the washer inside using a dolly. Once she left I finished the hookup to the waters for drainage system. It works perfectly. I had a bigger machine that broke down twice in 5 years, this time they couldn’t even get the parts to repair it. Repairman said if the could get the parts it would be $500 to repair it. Well they couldn’t get the parts. So much for such a high priced item. Never again will I pay that kind of money when I can get a machine I am much more satisfied with, and was less expensive—more in my price range now I’m retired. Thank you Amazon and AMTrucking for your great work.

  5. Best washer I have ever owned, I love that it is so big so you can do a little extra per load overall perfect washer 10 out of 10 would recommend!!!!!

  6. Lost time do to convulesence and shipping for house setup from delivery of Oct 1. 2021. Setup machine up on Nov 14, 2021. Could not see under front panel shippers drop off. After looking for the feet on front to adjusting height and balance. A pucker edge showed up close look at bottom front right edge. The reason for the tilting rocking during shippers bring in was. The front of machine was dropped from movers dolly to a height of 45 degrees from two wheels. Bending front feet and front lower panel. The bottom panel pushed up into machine about an inch or so. This was the rocking when brought in. She works fine. Conveinance of working do all as well as the washer matching units though.

  7. I never knew that a washer could be fun to use. Firstly, the color scheme is nice. Apparently they are all white these days, but this gives you a handsome grey acrylic see-through top so that you can watch what is going on. And it is remarkable what the microprocessor technology can do with the various agitation and wash/rinse cycles. I also like that the digital controls are simple (the most important thing) and easy to use. (Most manufactures make touch-screens impossible.)I looked for a lint filter, but it does not need one. It cleans itself. And though not silent, the sounds are easy to listen to and tell you what is going on. With some LED lights for the kids (I really don’t need them myself), it could replace You-Tube. Well almost. It seems to clean well and I hope it lasts a long time, but that is to be determined.

  8. UPDATE 25 OCTOBER 2022: This washer died a few days ago. Repairman just told us it will cost more than washer is worth to fix it so we should buy a new washer. This is the most short lived washer we’ve ever had! Absolute garbage. It worked ok until its’ sudden unexpected death. Kenmore’s usual1 year warranty DOES NOT APPLY TO APPLIANCES SOLD BY AMAZON! This has been a VERY EXPENSIVE NIGHTMARE THAT WE CAN’T AFFORD! I can’t recommend this worthless garbage to anyone under any condition. This product should not be sold to the public at any price! I will no longer buy any large appliances from Amazon after this experience.7 years ago (May 27, 2015) we purchased a HE Maytag Bravos EX washing machine. It died at the end of April 2022 so we got this Kenmore yesterday (May 3, 2022) to replace it. As such my review will compare this new machine to the old HE machine rather than the old style non-HE washing machines we had before it.This Kenmore balances loads the same way the Maytag machine did so no learning curve there this time! With our first HE we did have to learn how to best balance the loads. I always make certain I can see the center of the tub when loaded and except for the largest loads this seems to work 9/10 times. This machine is slower to lock the lid than the old machine was but that’s a plus in my book as it gives me a few seconds longer to toss in that item that I realize at the last moment, I forgot to add. This machine takes less time with the same loads as my old machine but that might be because I haven’t quite figured out how to set it to the same settings as the old one. My clothes came out clean and fresh however so perhaps I won’t try to find the old settings quite so much! The water levels seem to be fine compared to the old machine and this machine even allows for using more water during use via the fill level settings which is nice. The end of load chime is very soft but perhaps this is something I’ll find a way to increase the volume on.Compared to the old machine, the controls are more involved and detailed (the old one had a knob to turn to what we wanted) but the settings are not impossible to figure out. This one allows a presoak which the old one did not so that’s a plus. I have allergies so per my allergy doctor’s direction I wash my bedding in hot water once a month, every month. (Sheets get washed weekly in hot) The presoak means I can now use the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer in the machine rather than in my laundry tub which will keep my unfinished basement floor a bit dryer as I won’t have to transfer wet stuff to the laundry tub.The included discharge hose leaked like CRAZY so I have already abandoned it but I have not had good luck with the hard plastic discharge hoses ever so I wasn’t all that surprised by that. I got a length of 1 ID silicone tubing (Amazon!) and two stainless steel band clamps to connect the water outlet on the machine (which does not protrude very far from the back so connecting the band clamp was more difficult than it needed to be) and then to the inlet barb on my anti siphon stand tube (again unfinished basement so my waste water discharges into a two inch PVC stand pipe buried in the floor). This unusual method doesn’t leak and the water pressure seems to open the somewhat soft silicone tubing without issue so I’m happy with that solution. At this point my new Kenmore washing machine is less than 24 hours old and currently working on the 4th load of accumulated laundry but so far it’s working great. The Kenmore machine included a small sample of a Tide large load pod, and some Downy Unstoppables that I will not be using as I only buy unscented dye free products when it comes to soaps and laundry detergents. The old machine came with a packet of washing machine cleaner that stunk up our entire house for more than a week but I was rather surprised to see that the Kenmore didn’t include a sample of some sort of washing machine cleaner. (We did find a less scented option to wash the machine with.) Our old almost 7 year old machine didn’t stink or have slime build up near the soap dispenser drawer like my parents machine did but we were good about using the washing machine cleaner cycle whenever the indicator light came on. I don’t know if the Kenmore machine has an indicator light or not but the first thing I did with it was a washing machine cleaning cycle. With the old machine cleaning it every two weeks was far closer to accurate than monthly.Based on soap build up around the drawer area in the old machine we quickly removed it and just dumped soap into the main tub. With this new machine I’m doing the same so far but with the presoak feature I’ll likely use the drawer for the soaps when I need to presoak and remove it for a total cleaning (of the drawer unit) after the load is done. With the old machine we also learned to wipe down/dry any wet surfaces inside the machine if we were not going to be putting another load in immediately to keep it fresh. We also left the lid open whenever it was not in active use. (We also ran a dehumidifier near it which reduced the amount that the old machine rusted in our damp basement so we’re doing that for this one too.)Also when the Maytag died I first tried to repair it myself based on the error codes. (it ended up being the main board) I noticed that even when there was no water left in it I could still hear sloshing when the machine was moved around. When I gave up on it I completely disassembled it to get it out of my basement and the tub still sloshed despite being completely upside down. When the Kenmore arrived I could hear sloshing before water was ever added to it and before it was even out of the box. This seems to be how HE machines are designed and shouldn’t be thought of negatively but I found it interesting.I’ll update this if anything changes or in a month or two to confirm that it stayed in great working order.

  9. Fantastic washer but company I bought from took well over 40 days to deliver. They made ever excuse in the book and tried to bribe me by giving me a free warranty if I gave them a good review.

  10. Unlike my old washer, this one has a glass lid, so that you can see what is going on. So I watched it do a normal load. Not a big load, perhaps on the small side. Water came in for the wash cycle. The water did not cover the clothes. OK, maybe the agitation will get it all. Nope. I watched until the wash cycle ended. There was one shirt which had a sleeve that never did get wet! There is a “Deep Fill” option. It does not work on the normal cycle! On cycles where it does work, it is a really deep fill (lots of water). It needs a medium fill option that works with the normal cycle.

  11. It’s whisper quiet (nice) but I can hear it start to load and come back it hasn’t filled. Not sure what delay is. If I restart and stand there eventually it starts. It’s new so I’m trying to get hang of it. It’s huge and cute. Looks good.

The machine is quite and has a small footprint while having a nice large capacity. Overall very satisfied. Reason for only 4 stars is the control interface is a bit confusing and defaults to a very unusual (and not eco-friendly) wash configuration. It always defaults to “Heavy Duty”, Warm/Hot water, High Water and Heavy soil. Even changing main selector to “Normal” (from Heavy Duty) results in Warm Water, High Water and Extra Heavy Soil. You can adjust all the settings each time you run but that is very annoying when you have teenager running it who simply accept the default, dump in detergent and press start. There is no way to change the default setting. It offers a “auto water” level, “Normal Soil” and “Eco-Warm” setting but you have to select it each time. It is worth the money, around $700 most places (much nicer than most others I compared it to that run $1100+) but this one simple thing just seems really odd choice for the manufacturer.

  13. This is exactly the same kind of washing machine that is used in coin operated laundry mats. No electronic motherboard, unreliable sensors and it’s got real metal gears! Plus, Speed queen’s warranty doesn’t take a 3 month service reservation that only covers a motor; they actually stand by their product. It handles a full load with no problems, no off balance banging around, no draining problems, just clean clothes! Yes, it’s expensive but I would have to buy three machines at the box store to get the same, carefree years as this one. If and when I sell my house, this will come with me. The rest of the furniture is going to be piled up in the front yard set fire to.

  14. If I could give this product as zero I would. It has a control board issue after just two years. So now we have to purchasing new one. So if you want a product that only lasts a couple of years by GE if not I recommend staying away from it.

  15. I wish I could give this set a Zero as it has one problem after another. We purchased GE’s Washer & Dryer set in December 2021. Within 5 months the stabilizer in the washer broke, fabric softener had built up into scum, and the basket was rusting. To save anyone the hassle of months of trying to contact GE and getting the run around, DO NOT BUY THESE! They did send someone out to repair the stabilizer, which took about 2 months from first phone call to the actual replacement. Repair man said that GE’s answer on the basket was not under any warranty, so we just need to spray it with a clear seal as it was a cosmetic issue. I guess eventual rust on our clothes is just a cosmetic issue…I have used fabric softener in my old washer for 20+ years and have never had the nasty scum build up that I did in 5 months with the GE washer. The dryer does not get the hair off of our clothes and when I open the dryer door, hair falls into the floor. Nobody knows why it is not getting to the trap. Since GE does not want to fix the problems with their newer units, we will never buy their brand again.

  16. Easy to use. Wish it came with hoses to connect to the faucet.

  17. We are happy with this purchase

  18. This machine works better than my expensive Samsung washer ever did.

  19. Bought brand new. Clothes come out of washer covered in lint. We’ve followed all of the specific instructions for using the machine, but the problem still persists. After searching the internet, discovered this is a pretty common problem. Do not waste your money.

  20. The delivery was flawless and delivery guy was super nice and friendly. The washer is working great!

  21. We’ve had this for about 4 months now and we have zero issues… seems to have great power and it looks great.

  22. The only 2 cycles worth using are Bulky/Bedding and Heavy Duty because those are the only ones you can use Deep Fill on. All the other cycles use Auto Fill which gives you VERY LITTLE water levels! So little that your clothes aren’t even covered. So I do EVERYTHING on Heavy Duty because I do full laundry loads and need a FULL water level. Also, LET THE WASHER FILL FIRST before loading any clothes because it begins agitating as it’s filling, causing the clothes to agitate when there’s barely enough water. Otherwise, I really like it. It’s large, nice tub, and it’s quieter than my old GE. I haven’t had any problems with washing delicates on Heavy Duty.

  23. They don’t put Speed Queens in laundry mats for nothing. 5 year warranty from mfg. When my dryer dies I’m buying a Speed Queen.

  24. I truly don’t see any difference, between this product and less expensive product.

  25. My large washer broke. I am still struggling to find a comparable replacement that is available. I have a small back-up counter top washer, but it was not adequate for heavier clothes when wet, so I ordered this unit. Amazingly, it came quickly. It has proven that it is capable of washing heavier wet clothes like jeans and sweatshirts. I have to do more smaller loads than I would have to do with my regular washer. It is not automatic in its process to fill, drain, rinse and spin, so I am more involved in this the process and it takes more time. BUT, my clothes have never seemed cleaner! Detergent residue can often cause rashes, so I like to make sure to rinse many items twice. Easy to do manually with this machine, but having a difficult time finding a large automatic washer with the second rinse setting like the one I had (or find one available to buy). This washing machine has been a life saver and and an excellent investment as a back up. Truthfully, I like how it cleans so well, I am likely to continue to use it on small loads and intimate items when (if) I can ever buy a full sized, installed washer.

  26. Hooks up easily to kitchen sink. Machine is surprisingly quiet. There is a quick wash setting that uses a set amount of water, but for other modes, you will need to select water fill level. The machine will stop filling on its own, unlike similar style washing machines. Previously was using a camper washer with a separate spin and wash basin. This combines both steps into one. There is a spin cycle to get out excess water if you want to line dry instead of using a dryer. Very little detergent is needed for results. Purchased a dolly for transporting throughout my apartment. Just make sure on first use that the drain hose is very secure as mine popped off the first time and there was quite the flood in the kitchen. For first use, I recommend being present to ensure secure attachments. Since that one incident, I have had no issues. The machine is very quiet and the spin cycles produce a light vibration, but nothing compared to the spinning of my previous machine. I use mine several times a week and have not noticed an increase in electric bill. Highly recommend this product. The price may seem high, but the efficiency and convenience is well worth it.

  27. Large copassity

  28. It seems really solid and quite. It works well and was very competitively priced.

  29. I had to bend it into a loop, which looks and feels awkward. But it works as intended. It feels like a kludge, but it gets the job done for cheap and seems very sturdy.
